Factory Visit

I stopped by the Dutchman Voltage factory the other day for a look see. Boy were they surprised. It was a quick tour, folks were nice but really rushed me through. They said they don't get many visitors. I also toured Forest River XLR plant. They treated me like a VIP. I got to move at my pace asking any question I wanted and if the guide didn't know the answer, he called someone and got it. The next day I toured Forest Rivers Work & Play trailers and fifth wheels. Very impressed with the walkthrough and their product. These are tanks! they're lacking in the interiors compared to Voltage and XLR, but is very satisfactory. Here's a few pictures. Enjoy.

The photos are great. I like to see how these things are built. Were the photos all from Voltages or did I see an XLR sign.

The roof photos were from XLR, but Voltage is exactly the same. As fast as I was moved through the Voltage plant I wasn't able to see all I wanted, or get more pictures

All slide are pre-built and sitting on pallets. This one was at XLR. I didn't see any at Voltage as I was whisked through.

Thanks Slim....you could have actually seen my 3600 coming down the line :-)

Wish these companies would offer a photographic progress report when you order a unit to your liking....

I guess I was lucky because I did get a photo update as my trailer was being built. It took from October to Febuary to get it built so they probably felt sorry for me.
Anyway thanks for these pictures. It's always helpful to see what's under that exterior siding.

Great pictures, I think most of us would enjoy a factory tour.

Reminds me of an old saying...

I love my Voltage and wish I knew more about how it's made!!!

It was a 7 hour drive just for a 30 minute walk through. I called a couple of days in advance and they seem to have thought it was odd I wanted a tour. I was told that they very seldom have visitors. But I informed her I was coming and wanted to tour the facility as an owner. She in an unenthusiastic voice said okay.

When I arrived I called again and asked when I could be scheduled? She asked morning or afternoon... of course I said morning. She put me on hold fo 5 minutes or so came back and said 3pm tomorrow.. I said fine, not sure why I was given the option of morning?? I called XLR immediately and they fit me in the next morning. Perfect, that worked great.

I discovered while touring the XLR plant that workers start at 5 am and work until 3pm. So I guess Dutchman didnt want to walk me during worker hours! That seemed odd. I've owned numerous rv's and have toured numerous plant tours always during worker hours.

I stayed an extra day and toured Work&Play again during worker hours. Both XLR and Work&Play were excellent tours and worth the trip, and the lasted well over an hour at my pace. I would encourage anyone that can visit the plant, but insist during working hours not while everyone is trying to go home. Just before the walk through at Dutchman I saw several that were discussing who would take me through...from the looks on their faces no one seemed over joyed. I stepped up and said if this is a problem I will come back tomorrow.... no, no, we can do it now, thats fine... so off we went. I did the best I could on pictures.

I did ask about slide issues, I was informed that they will continue using the schwintek on smaller slides but are considering switching over to the cable system on larger slides. When that change will occur was unknown.

Some of you may have had a great experience and the factory, mine was not what I expected it to be. The guy that walked me through was friendly enough, but the air around the situation was undesirable. Hope you have a better experience if you decide to take the trip.

I did a factory tour years ago as a owner of a Teton in Casper Wy. Ours were in the morning & you needed to call and get on a list as they only took 10 per tour. Was a couple hour tour. Got to ask questions & they asked if we had any problems with our 5th wheels. They would set-up repairs for major items at their shop . I was able to bring mine buy the next day & they came & looked at my slight problem. The replacement part was at my home buy the time I got back in three days.
They are no longer built but if anyone is looking for well built top of the line 5th wheel check out a Teton.

We took the Voltage tour. Very accommodating. Spent and hour or so with us. Unfortunately at the time, I didn't know what I was looking at. 5 or 6 work stations. Everyone has X amount of time to complete their jobs then a whistle blows and all the workers push the dollies that the units are being built on, to the next station. I didn't ask what happens if someone wasn't finished when the whistle blew, but I think I know now. LOL. Crank out a couple of full units a day.

He was definately at work the day Slim took the pictures, you can see a glob of foil tape hanging off the ducts....

Great pictures Slim, judging by the date, one of those might have been mine.... of course, the whistle blew just as they started mine...
