I've had mine closed off with storm window plastic held on with masking tape. It wasn't AZ heat so much for me but OK cold I wanted to keep out.
While I had the louvered panel off I added hinges to it so I could use some of that wasted space.
While you're in there take a look at the ABS drain from the kitchen sink to make sure the cold water intake isn't sitting on top of the ABS.
