buying a voltage

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are upgrading from our 323bhs sprinter to a voltage V4000. We got the numbers back and everything looks good. I have a couple questions. If we do go ahead and spring for it is there anything in particular we need to pay attention to when doing our walk through? Also what kind of hitch does everyone recommend (16k-18k)? Also does anyone tow this behemoth with a 350? Thanks for the add and I appreciate the help!

Looking at the online floor plan of the V4000...looks like its a 40ft where my 2014 Epic 3800...is 38 ft.

I had a Reese 30K 5th wheel hitch installed in the Highway Products bed on my Silverado 3500. Overkill in capability never hurt anyone!!

Not sure whose 350 or 3500 you're thinking of...but for a trailer this size I went with a Silverado Duramax 3500 dualie. Put Firestone air bags in the rear springs so you can level the truck with the trailer hooked up.

I can set the cruise at the speed limit and go anywhere I chose...at the speed limit. Of course I'm burning diesel like its going out of style, so usually drive about 65 to 70 MPH.

No problems at all!

Thanks for the reply!

I have a 06 f350 diesel with bags now and pulls like a dream , of course i tow cautiously too.. I have a SCT livewire but with tunes but I just use it as a monitor.. I like to take my time as the white knuckles and my steering wheel dont get along to well . My hitch weight was about 3200pds as I had a electric golf cart in the bed too along with the 2200 pound tg weight. lol.

I have an V3895 , its 42ft 7" Dry weight is 15696lbs with all the other items in there, Im close to 19K,,, so I have a Chevy 3500HD CC DRW with a Husky 25K Hitch, I have Air Bags with only 10 pounds since the Camper is flat on the Hitch…It drive around 65mph and get 10 mpg….I may be wrong but, when I looked up the 4000, it showed 43ft 10" with a weight of 14506lbs?? so if you add items, Gas, a little water, something in the garage, etc. you may be up around 18K , so go with a bigger Hitch, you will feel better with all that weight. Good luck and Happy camping….Your truck is good enough

If you notice I said I used it as just a monitor. I have it set up to monitor all my gauges. I don't use the tunes.. I don't even use the tow tune. At least not till I tear it down next yr and maybe not at all as I may want to upgrade next yr after our house is built. But yes, its on borrowed time if I did.

We pulled our V3990 from Minneapolis to CA 2 months ago, with my 2015 F350, stock 6.7 Diesel. Spent the extra money and went with the superglide hitch, which was awesome, no concerns on turning and backing up. Trailer sat nice on the truck, could probably use bags for slight relief.

Hard to tell with in your pic there but is it a SRW or a DRW?

Ah, good call. I had gauges on my Duramax, I was always sweat'n EGTs. I dig having a stock truck without that, I keep my foot in it going up hills with no worries. My Duramax was just lightly modified, but any extra fuel sends EGTs to the roof. 6.0s don't do so bad stock though.

Yeah, my families rebuilt 5 of them... Get them studded, oil cooler, and egr delete and they are pretty much bullet proof so to speak.. After posting on a couple other sites it seems I may need to upgrade the truck instead of building it to accommodate the extra weight.

I had to do that from a 'paid for' truck too.

I honestly don't know how some of you pull these trailers with SRW trucks. Don't get me wrong, I am not in any way saying you are wrong for doing it. It was my experience with my bagged and modified F350 SRW that causes me to form this opinion. In the constant Oklahoma wind, the trailer was always using the 3400lbs on the hitch to push the back of the truck around and flexing the tires. The tires were the heaviest Firestone's I could get, and they were rated to handle the weight.

After a few trips of 4 hours, we looked at trucks that were better suited to handle the length/weight of our 3905 (42 ft long, 16460lbs empty on the CAT scale). We found a nice used F450 DRW pickup and the difference is amazing. I have driven 8 plus hours in a day to Texas and Colorado through the mountains, and had no trouble with handling at all.

Remember, this is just MY experience, and you might not have the constant 20-30mph winds we do here. But for anyone considering buying any big toy hauler, it might be something to consider.

That's why I got bought a V3605 and not one of the 3 axle Voltages.
I towed 4000 + miles this past summer to South Dakota and back with no problems at all. I fell my SRW 350 tows this size rig fine & safe.

My Voltage 3600 is 39' 11" and weighs in around 17-18K or more. I went with the heavier hitch and tow with 2008 F350 single rear axle. It performs great.

Don't forget when you buy your truck, if you are like the rest of us, you will add more weight to the Camper and the Truck....SideXSide or 2 M/C's in the camper, extra Gas Tanks in the Truck, etc.... I have towed my V3895 with my Chevy 2500HD with a banks system S/Wheel and it was fine, but when I went to the 3500HD CC DRW, there was a Difference in the winds with Duel Wheels...Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to get a Ford F450 or a Chevy E450, but Chevy don't have a 450, Now I have friends with Dodge 350 DRW and they move just as good, but after having both and with the big Toy Hauler, go with the DRW, Just my thinking, your the one putting out the cash, and all the Big three will fill your needs, Good Luck

I have a voltage 3818 and pull it with a 2015 F350 SWR I do not like the way it handles it. I'm looking at a new truck also. Looked at a F450 but do not like the $70,000 sticker price. I might try and see if I can find a good used Internatonal or FL60 to pull it

I bought a FL60 to pull my Teton after I sold my 05 6.0l Ford 350. Sure didn't have the power but did tow it nice. Sold it & went back to a 6.7l Ford. Way better on power & tows my V3605 great. As you have a 3 axle rig you need a dully.
Being you aren't in the west with all the mountains we tow in a MD truck might work okay for you. For me going up hills at 45 mph just didn't cut it.
