Voltage 3970

Hi,
I am thinking of purchasing a 2014 Voltage 3970 and was wondering if any of you out there pull it with a SRW one ton. I have a 2010 Ram 3500 Mega Cab 4x4 with a 6.7 Cummins and 3.73's. But its not a dually. Can the truck handle this unit? We are mostly on flat ground out here.

Looking forward to your input!

Patrick

Yes it can... every fall in the tailgate lot I'll see a dozen or more 1 ton SRW trucks pulling large triple axle toy haulers, week after week.

No it can't... if you look at the trucks tow / payload ratings. Dodge has a great tool on the Ram website that calculates tow capacities based on the engine / transmission configurations.

Past the specs I think a good rule of thumb would be that a SRW truck is OK for a two axle trailer but you should have a DRW truck to tow a triple axle toy hauler.

I've done it, but I sure like my dually now. As long as it's not windy, I would think you would be fine, but I would make darn sure I had good tires on the pick up and trailer. A blowout with a dually is fairly manageable, with a srw, it can be a white knuckle experience, especially a rear tire. Front tire blow outs are about the same, dually to srw, but when you lose a rear on a srw, the trailer tries to push the pick up sideways like a power slide from the dukes of hazard. The cummins has plenty of power and brakes to handle the hills, and you do have an exhaust brake, right?

Can it do it sure seen all kinds of them on the road doing it.
Would I do it NO WAY
I own a SRW 1 ton & I bought the largest Voltage that it will tow safely & not be over loaded. Heck with strong side winds I need to slow to 50-55 as the "tail starts to wag the dog". Have towed for years & had a class A license and you sure don't want to tow a trailer that's not meant to be pulled by your tow vehicle.
I liked the 3950 but sure didn't want to also buy a new truck just to pull it. So we bought a V3605 which we are with.

Yes I have an exhaust brake...great invention. I am not worried about the power, especially since i did a DPF delete. I am more concerned with the stability of the truck, Having said that, when considering the weight of the truck to trailer ratio relative to a 19000# tractor pulling a super-b with a 90,000+# load. Am i worrying unnecessarily?
