I carry a one step platform that I put out when the last step is too high.

It's not hard to switch them out, but helps to have an extra set of hands to hold it up while you start the bolts. As far as the height to the ground, it will depend on the brand of steps you decide to buy. Some have 7,8, or 9 inches rise between steps. I went with the Flexco brand. I think they have an 8 inch rise. It will also depend on how high or low the front of the rv is once your set up. So far I have been pleased with mine. I've not been in a campsite yet where the bottom step hit the ground. I chose Flexco for 2 reasons. One was the price and the other was that the steps are evenly spaced apart. Some brands have 7 inch rise between the first 3 steps and then a 9 inch rise for the last step at the top. That seemed like a trip hazard to me.
