A/C unit amps?

Hi- Purchased 1 2012 Komfort 2820. We found that when plugged into the 30 amp service at our home the air condition was blowing warm air. The dealership says the air condition will only work on 50 amp service. (Something NO ONE mentioned before we bought). Has anyone else had this issues? Any fixes? I don't expect a cold trailer, but something less than 90 degrees would be good!

That doesn't sound exactly correct on the dealer's part. There are a few million AC units working off of 220V AC at 30 amps.
If you had two units then more amperage would be needed. However, yours is operating but not working properly. What you have is a problem with the AC unit itself, not electrical service related at all.
The a$$hole dealer is trying to get out of a repair probably or knows of the problem and doesn't want to stand behind it.

How do you get access to 50amps with a 30amp RV?
(or is it a 50amp RV?)

I would LOVE to see the AC on the roof of an RV that draws more than 30amps! It'd cool a meat locker.

Your dealer is nuts. You may need 50 amps for 3 units, but for one (and the rest of the camper) a 30 amp 120 volt hookup is more than enough.

My rig is a 30 amp unit with a single A/C. Typically it draws between 14 and 18 Amps at 120 Volts. I can even run it off a 20 Amp breaker when I'm parked at home using the 20 to 30 Amp adapter. Works fine to cool the Arizona heat down a bit.

You "might" be able to run the A/C on a 15 amp branch circuit, however something is going to fail sooner or later. You may burn up the A/C compressor due to an under voltage condition, melt a cord or plug, possibly a wire or breaker. Electrical fires are no fun under any circumstances. I agree the dealer is trying to blow you off for some reason.

At home the minimum circuit I would use would be 20 amps with as short a cord as possible. I have a couple of dedicated 30 amp RV circuits at my place just to keep things plugged up and cooled down. They don't cost all that much to install and are a whole lot cheaper than replacing a burned up A/C or burned up RV.

no problem here running either of my ac units on 30 amp reduced from a 50 amp plug.. The ac unit runs off 120 volts not 220vac. A 30 amp plug is only 120 vac. When you run 2 ac units on 50 amp service each ac unit runs off one leg of the 220 v at 120 v thus the 220v needed for two ac units. If your unit is not running on 30 amps something is wrong with the ac or the wiring.

I witnessed my buddies future father-in-law plug his fathers camper into a 30 amp welder outlet (240v), hilarity ensued. By hilarity, I mean popping and smoking, followed by a lot of cursing. That was an awkward moment.
This was before I owned a camper, I learned the difference between 30 amp 120v and 240v that day.

My AC is utilizes a 15A plug...but it's a small AC unit for a small trailer! :-P

Your dealer is full of it and needs schooled.

As Wahoonc says, don't dismiss the low voltage aspect of plugging it in at home. Ya the dealer is a mess or misspoke but low voltage is real and can damage things. Plug your camper in, start the AC, and measure your voltage. Anything below 108 Volts AC is bad.

Even though we lose power more than most down here, when it's on, it's a solid 122 volts.

I have a Danali 5th wheel with a 13,500 BTU AC unit . My RV is 50 amp and when I use an adapter to plug into my home 20 amp plug and the AC works great. I do not think the dealer knows what they are talking about. You do need to put a meter on the voltage at the plug and make sure it is not low. If the voltage is good the AC should work fine.
