Stuck in mud!?!?

Invited some of our RVer friends over for the long weekend.
When they arrived last nignt, the ground seemed pretty firm but we found our vehicles making ruts in the ground. Two wheel drive tires did spin pulling in. 4x4's pulled in ok. I'm afraid the problem will be pulling out after the tires make their divots after being parked overnight. Along with using some old carpet for traction, would you recommend letting some air out of the tires to get a wider foot-print?? We're on grass covered clay soil. Its dry on the surface, but still a bit damp a few inches down..
Any Suggestions?

play it by ear. Once you get moving dont stop until you know you are on solid ground. Be prepared to be pulled out also so if you start spinning in, stop. Don't dig deeper thing you are going to miraculously pull out, get help.

my thought... have a tow strap already on 2 wheel drive haulers....use a 4 wheel drive truck to assist from the get go …..to prevent the ruts and spinning …. especially if others have to use the same tracks to get out next

Well this became an interesting story..
Good Sams road service said they wouldn't tow it out of a residential yard, not even the owners!!

AAA sent a guy who said we would need special equipment to get it out.. to the tune of $400 plus dollars!!

Harbor freight sold us a 12,000 pound winch that cost no more than the tow truck and plucked that truck/camper (that was resting on its differential) out like a toy, with the help of a cooperative tree... That along with the help of a snatch block and 100 feet of 9,000 lb tow straps...

At least AAA came up with a solution. Good Sams in effect said, sorry your on your own...

Glad you were able to snatch it out of the mud.
I am also happy that I just renewed my AAA with RV coverage!

I know its a little late, but thanks for the good advice, Mongo and Tanman..

We were able to tow the travel trailers out of the yard with no problem, using 4 wheel low gear, as the weight was distributed over 8 wheels. The pickup camper with all its weight supported by only 4 wheels, sank right thru the root layer..

It kept 4 of us busy the whole afternoon. The following is a list of what we tried over roughly 5 hours and 2 cases of beer. Any one of them might work in different conditions.

First We jammed 6 ft long carpet strips under the wheels
Then we tried to tow it out with a single pickup
Then we tried with two pickups
Then we tried a 1 ton chain hoist
Then a neighbors small tractor
Then Good Sams
Then AAA
Finally the 12,000 lb winch

The one thing we didn't try was shown on a you tube video, where a guy in Oklahoma, who had sunk in up to his axles, used ratchet tie down straps to fasten a short 2x4 section to each of his tires and just drove on out!!! ...

In time the story will be retold over a few drinks and we'll get lots of good laughs out of it.. We'll also be a lot more careful the next time around.

I keep thinking of the saying that being experienced is the result of learning from the bad decisions we have made..

Hope you all have great season and a safe one.

The same way you did the photos. Manage attachments and then upload it. You only get 500 MB.

We put everything we could think of under the tires to get some traction..
It all cleaned up in about a half hour. We trashed most of it.
It will be a real adventure mowing around the ruts, until I get them taken care of... More rain on the way
