New Owner Propane Tank Question

Hello All,

I am a first time owner of a Travel Trailer. My wife and I recently sold our Class C, and bought a 2008 Dutchmen Four Winds 5th Wheel. No Owners Manuals came with it, and I cannot find them online anywhere. Anyway, I have a question; I just bought the RV and filled the two propane tanks on my way home. When using the propane in the RV, do I turn on both tanks at the same time? Or, just one tank at a time? Thanks in advance for any help.

Ken - turn them both on and leave them on - especially if you have an automatic changeover valve in the system (which, if you have two tanks, you most likely have the changeover valve). The only time mine get turned off is when I remove one to refill it or when I am done camping for the season.

Thank you sir! I will check when I get home tonight and confirm that I do have an "Automatic Change-over Valve".

I shut mine off when it's at home in case a line or hose goes bad somewhere, I won't lose all my propane. Mine sits more than it's used...

Thanks. I keep mine off at home too. Unless I need to use it.

I keep both on, but I'm on shore power and basically live in it.
("basically" meaning at all times that I'm not actually chasing sunsets in my teardrop)

I'm not sure anything is actually sucking on those tanks since I avoid cooking.

Oh, and welcome!

Thanks for the welcome snakebitten. Lit or not, doesn't your stove pilot light use propane?

No pilot. One of those clickclick things I believe.

Our stove has a pilot, but you have to keep the oven knob in the pilot position, if you turn it to off the pilot goes out.

Welcome to the forum.... with that said I do my propane a little different. I only allow one side to operate at one time. I keep my drivers side tank shut down. I only pull from one side at a time. When my passenger side gets low or out I turn on the drivers side only for the time necessary to refill my empty tank.. This gives me better control of my tanks and propane. I know I always have a full or nearly full tank to fall back on.
The automatic valve is great but if you do not monitor your gas you might wind up without any by accident. My method I always have propane as a back up.

Thanks for the welcome Tanman. I think I will try your method as well as the designed method to see which works best for me. Like you, I like the idea of knowing that I have propane to fall back on. Having never owned a travel trailer, I don't know how much I will go through on any given trip. In my Class C, I only had one large tank that was a permanent fixture with a site gauge. I never ran out with that, but I also never took an extended trip either. I do see us taking longer trips with this one.

Just get yourself a gauge and put on the tank that you're using. Keep both tanks on at all times. Very simple and you always know exactly how much you have. Always have a backup and will never run out or even run low.

amre2me2, do you have a gauge on both tanks? Or, just one?

Yes, they only cost 10-15 dollars so put one on each tank and you always know exactly what you have.

They're not exactly accurate but they give a really good ballpark estimate
