fan in fuse box running - is that ok?

Hi, first time cling plugged into 30 amp power in my Kodiak cub 175bh. The fan in the fuse box is running. Is that normal? It didn't run when I had it plugged in at home on 20 amp.

Are you sure that is not the fan in the converter creating DC power to charge your batteries? I have never had a fan in any of my fuse panels.

When you first plug into AC the converter often goes into a bulk charging mode that outputs 14 volts or so for a max of 4 hours then normal charge mode at lesser output and then finally a lower output ( trickle) mode to prevent over charging your battery or batteries. If your batteries are in great shape you will avoid the bulk mode often. Bulk mode especially creates a ton of heat and thus needs the fans.

As mentioned by dsol, I would also suspect this is the fan in the DC converter. When experiencing 12V loads, the converter fan may turn on as it ramps up to meet the demand while holding battery voltage constant. Could also indicate batteries low on charge. If you shut off all lights and other potential 12V loads, the fan may turn off. If it is on nonstop regardless of 12V loads, I would start to troubleshoot batteries.

@sundancer, I bet you are right but the fan would be for the charger and not the fuses. So if the OP is hearing a fan run then it would likely be for the converter portion of the component and not the fuses themselves.

Hopefully, whatever it is will stop after some amount of time when the batteries are fully charged.

Sure, just pointing out the converter/fuse/circuit breaker box, to the OP, may just be the fuse box to him and perhaps is unaware of what it does overall.

And it is exactly that - the converter portion. The very nice campground host stopped by to check me in, and he took a listen, said oh that's normal, it's your converter. Was so nice to hear!

The converter has a fan that is microprocessor controlled to keep the converter from overheating. The converter has two job: one it supplies 12Vdc power when on shore power and it also charges the batteries. It's normat for it to run especially when in bulk charge mode. No reason to be concerned. The converter is located in the bottom of the power center that is why it sounds like the "fuse" box has a fan.

If it runs continuously, you may have batteries that have been overdiscarged, and will likely need to be replaced. Take the whole rig to your nearby battery dealer and have the converter and batteries tested.

Good to know. It has not continued running. Ran the first day for about 3-4 hours, and only run periodically since.

Sounds normal. It always runs a good four hours in bulk charge mode the first four hours I use mine each trip. I wouldn’t worry about it at all. There will likely be plenty of other things to consume your thoughts that need fixing and tweaking down the road. [emoji3]

Fan is in the converter with also charges the battery and yes it will run continuously when in bulk charge mode.
