Tennis balls and pipe insulation
I have used tennis balls on the downspouts for the last few years and they have done a great job of protecting the cover from tears. I also use foam pipe insulation cut into four inch lengths to cover the straps so they don't rub the paint off the bottom edge of the trailer.
On a side note, I have found the cover to be a great investment. I wash and wax the trailer in the fall before I put the cover on, and in the spring I take it off and am ready to roll. It does help to have someone assist me when I install it and take it off, but I believe the cover is saving my camper some damage during the unpredictable winter weather in Missouri.
I also figure that a cover is cheaper protection than building a cover or a metal building. I don't want to pay taxes on a structure either. Missouri gets enough taxes on my trailer each year as it is. (Personal property taxes! Yuck!)
The only bad part of having a cover is that when I put it on the trailer I know that the camping season is over and it makes me sad.
