Denali 289RK slide system?

I'd like to know about the slide system in use for the main slide room on this trailer. I see the rack and pinion support mechanism underneath but I don't see any kind of a motor driving it. I also see a large diameter shaft (ram?) that appears to do the work of extending and retracting the slide. Is this shaft motor driven or hydraulic?

How can I manually override this system should it become necessary to do so?

Any insights into this slide system will be greatly appreciated.

I'd sure would like to know in case I ever have to operate it manually. The closet slide looks rather straightforward but I'm at a loss at what to do about the big slide.

I'm not sure about your model - but to manually retract the slide on our Rubicon 2900 - we found the mechanism by looking at the stairs across from the slide. - there is a hole thru the chassis where you insert a long tool (supplied with the trailer) and crank it......I wish DH was here - he might be able to explain it better!

AHA! Found it!
I never thought to look on the chassis on the other side from the slide. Makes sense now. Looks like I'll have to cut a hole in the fender skirt to use it though. Right at the red X in the picture below.

Dutchmen, in the infinite wisdom, didn't put a hole to stick the manual crank on mine either. I guess I'll put one in this week. I have found that if I am prepared, I most likely wont need it. I watched it turn today and it looks like it will take about a 1000 turns to open or close the slide. Sure hope I never have to do it!!


Occupant, I am going to us a 1/2" or 3/4" electrical knock out punch and put in a black plastic bushing so it looks nice.

I don't have a set of punches so I may use a 3/4" hole saw. I like the idea of the plastic bushing to cover the hole though. Good luck.

If you do cut the hole in the skirting and ever have to use it, be very careful not the "rod" rub against the skirting while turning. The skirting is thin and your nice small round hole may end big and ugly...

You're right on about thin material there. I might add to your suggestion, if drilling with a hole saw perhaps a back up block behind the aluminum will give a nice clean hole and prevent blowing through the aluminum.

Just finished it this morning. Used a 1 1/8" hole saw and a plastic bushing I picked up at Ace Hardware. I used silicone sealant around the bushing to help seal the edge of the hole.

See the pics. (The hole is not as misaligned as it appears in the second photo, just a bad camera angle)

Looks good! Now all you need is a plug for the hole. How about a nice chrome electrical knockout plug? Or, you could go over to EcoWater Systems on La Linda Way and ask Christina if she has a plug that will fit. Or back to ACE for a plug.

Looks good! Do you think that the hole needs to be that large? I'm glad you did yours first so I can ask these questions!

My crank coupler is just a hair over 3/4" in diameter. I went to Ace and got a bushing for a 1" hole and another one for a 1 1/8" hole to see which size would work the best. The coupler would barely fit through the small bushing so I went with the bigger of the two. No regrets here.

Seriously, I'm planning to leave it as is since there is no water intrusion problem at this location. I may add a plug later if I see any corrosion though.

Been to Sierra Vista before?

The only thing about not having that hole covered is it may make you a little loose in turns 3 and 4.... (NASCAR reference)

I am sure I'll do the same next week when I have time.
