Question State of Texas TT Inspections

Greetings,

For the Texas TT folks - I got a letter from the state that said I had to inspect my 213RBSL a few weeks ago.

Then I go on the DMV web site yesterday and it says "Effective Sept 1, 2017 in order to comply with Senate Bill 1001 and Texas Transportation Code Section 548.052, the safety inspection requirements for trailers have been revised.

Trailers, semitrailers, pole trailers, or mobile homes having an actual Gross weight or registered gross weight of 7,500 lbs. or less are exempt from inspection. All other vehicles are unaffected by this change."

The 213RBSL is 5,300 lbs or so w/o owner "stuff".

Any Texas folks know what's going on here?

If I gotta get it inspected I will. Nothing like confusion with the DMV huh?

Thanks

I went to the DMV to title my new Wolf Pup last week. (I bought it out of state)

After paying taxes and a hefty penalty for registering it LATE, (I camped in it for 2 months before coming home. And then Hurricane Harvey.....)
I asked if this TT would need an inspection before the tag renewal next year. The nice lady was new and I had never seen her before. I have been using this office for nearly 20 years. She asked her supervisor, who I do know, and she stated to me....."New rules just went into effect on September 1st and your certificate of origin lists the weight as below 7500lbs. So no. You will not require an inspection"

I love the answer. I'll believe it when they renew next year without an inspection.

Thanks for the information.

I'll let you know how it goes when I go through the on-line registration process.

I was down around your way last week for a cybersecurity conference in Downtown Houston.

Didn't see to much of Harvey remnants around but I didn't venture far from downtown.

Yea, it's been a month and the CITY has been spruced up rather nicely already. You have to venture into residential areas, and especially the rural areas around Houston, to see the real piles of debris.

I haven't hauled any of my pile off until the insurance company says they have approved the claim. I'm afraid they'll want a picture of something in the pile.

Inspection for TT over 7500 pounds require annual inspection in the state of Texas. Hook up your trailer take it to an authorized inspector(all they do is check your running/brake lights) The inspection facility will submit an on-line verification that your vehicle has been inspected. This allows you to re-register your trailer on the DMV website, your registration arrives in the mail.

Yep, and I think it is $7.00

Cost less than the gas to tow it to the inspector.

However, for me, it would be a real problem with the 213RBSL, since I don't think I could drag it out of it's spot with less than 2-3 days effort. First, it's surrounded! I've unwittingly (my claim) landscaped it into a corner. And second, it probably weighs so much over gross ratings that it WOULD cross over the 7500 lb limit.

Fortunately it doesn't officially require the inspection. But it isn't really a candidate for traveling anyways. Truly a TinyHouse.

Both of us being from Wylie- nearest place being Plano parkway just west of Jupiter? Don't recall the business name.

Update. I took a chance and renewed online about 10 days ago without inspection.

Yea! Got the sticker yesterday and we are ready to go.

Figure 1 trip to Lake Lavon (C of E) for a last trip of the year), clean both the tanks and winterize.

Nice camp. About 6 miles from the house.

So for you Texas TT folks with rigs under 7500 your good to go,,,at least online.
