Santa Barbara camping?

Hi all, we are taking off tomorrow from Colorado. We are looking to stay 3 night's in Santa Barbara then hit Solvang (Flying Flags RV resort) and move down to San Diego(Mission Bay RV resort) to finish up.
We are looking at 2 campgrounds (State Parks) in SB Jalama Beach and Carpinteria. Of these 2 do any of you have an opinion? I hear Carpinteria can be pretty busy but at this time of year probably not. Also we like how close it is to SB. Jalama was mentioned to us last night as a wonderful place but it looks to be at least 45 min to SB and is it that much better to make it worth the drive?
BTW we are primarily surfing (beginner) and road biking.
