No Interstates!

After a taxing family funeral in Kansas, we wanted to avoid stress on the way back to South Carolina. We told the GPS "Avoid Freeways (Interstates)"

What a joy! We don't travel over 65 anyway, and we actually got home with 30 fewer miles! But no traffic jams, no irate drivers, just small towns, and peace and quiet. We took some US Highways, a lot of State highways, and even a few county highways. We got to see terrain and areas that most people never see! Get this! - We crossed the Mississippi River on a ferry from MO to KY! (I broke off the BBQ propane fixture under the rear bumper getting it on the ferry. I quickly shut off the tanks, and got a pipe cap in the town on the other side. Luckily, it was the low-hanging fixture, and not the black iron pipe itself. No problem!) We made no camping reservations on the return trip, and just started checking the Good Sam GPS for sites around 4pm. Sometimes had to veer off the route by 10 miles to get to one, but they were all great!

Yup, we routinely choose US-301 instead of I-95 for the same reason.

I run the roads for a living... I quite often get burned out on the interstate driving, I will jump off on the nearby US highway for a while. Not always as fast, but a lot more to see. Our retirement plan is to ride as many back roads as possible.

Reminds me of the old Greyhound advertisements... "See America, Ride Greyhound" and at the time some comedian quipped "See the America Greyhound missed... Ride Trailways"

Taking back roads is similar to our agreement when we travel which is to never eat at chain restaurants. Mom and pop are much more interesting and usually a lot better tasting.

I just always worry about the low overpasses on some of the back roads.

We tend to stay away from the chain restaurants too... I can eat at them at home, why eat there while on the road?

Thumbs up Crazy GPS

There are a few of us backroad trekkers. I use the GPS using "avoid interstates" and "shortest distance." The only problem is when a medium to large city is on the route. Driving the city streets with a trailer in tow is almost painful. I have to use a paper map to verify GPS routes.

You are certainly correct! When our TT and truck were both brand new, we took the city streets through "Little Havana" in Miami FL! When you see you're heading to a city, it's best to "wing it," on your own around the town, or add a waypoint on one side or the other.
