291 resl

New to the forum and wanting lots of information about the Kodiak 291RESL. Looks like a great RV. Don't have a vehicle yet so help with choosing one would help. Looking for SUV, need to know what size and types work well for towing. Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome Dave you will find a lot of info here.

This question can open a can of worms!!

I see that the 2015 empty trailer weight is 6600LBS. So you can figure it loaded at about 8000LBS.

This will leave you at a minimum of a 1/2 ton truck or SUV that must have a tow package. In general, and I say this lightly, most 1/2 tons without a tow package are rated towing around 7000LBS.

This trailer is slightly lighter then mine and I have no problem towing with a 1/2 ton truck. However, I had the truck long before the trailer. If I were shopping for a new truck, I most likely would be looking at a 3/4 ton.

I hope you noticed that I didn't recommend one tow vehicle over another

Based on what I can find on that trailer you are going to be hard pressed to find an SUV that can handle that. I don't think anyone builds a 3/4t truck based SUV anymore. When searching tow ratings on vehicles pay special attention to the fine print. As an example: We have a 2003 F150 according to the towing specifications it can handle a 6800# trailer.... and Tinkerbell was my momma!

In reality that is with a 150# driver, no cargo, no spouse and no dog in the truck. You have to deduct all the "extra" weight you are adding to the vehicle to get the true allowable towing weight. FWIW my real world number comes in around 5600# which is a lot closer to reality. You have to look at the GVW and GCWR numbers on your proposed vehicle, knowing the actual weight of the vehicle is key too, along with the weight of all the stuff you plan to haul.

Good luck with your search! Seat of the pants I would be looking for a 3/4t crew cab of some sort then put a cap on the bed.

That thing looks like what a bunch of kids around Elko here are running. I'd have to do a body lift on my 3805 to even think of hitching it up. I doubt the springs could be re-arched that much.

We tow our 291 RESL with a 2014 Escalade. No issues.
