It's very possible for the converter to die as it's more likely the battery has died.

I suppose you've had the battery checked and if the converter is actually producing 12 volts?

More amperage is good but too much is a waste of money if not used. The 55 amp should work for your unit. 65 amp would be overkill unless you have a ton of 12 volt appliances and electronics that...

It's more than likely a converter. A converter converts 100VAC to 12VDC for your lamps, circuit boards and other things.
Any 30 amp converter should work for you, some are better than others...
