The switch itself is actually messed up. The switch on the light is the only way to turn it on and off. I have done what you are talking about though.

Bedroom light stopped working

The first time my wife and I took out new TT out the bedroom light stopped working. I put a new bulb in and that did not work. I connected my volt meter and and it was reading 12v, but when...
