He's got a 3970. Doesn't that have that ceiling thingy that prevents direct access to the LR A/C? (like my 3950)

Welcome to the club. Re-tape everything and remove construction debris from ducts. You may need to put sections of PVC tubing in where the duct has collapsed. I added a new vent above my easy chair...
