Unless something has changed drastically the dealer is dead wrong. They put a piece of 5/8" plywood about 6"-8" wide between the two studs and staple it in place. The wall studs are typically 1"x3"...

I would not use a lag bolt over 3/4" long. Need to verify that there is actually a backer in the wall. You have wood wall framing, it may be 2"'x2" or it could be 1"'x2". If you can't find the backer...
