Agree but it makes a different sound without water to pump. If no faucet was open & pump is running means one of three things. No water in tank, leak in water lines, or bad pump. ;)

Are you sure the tank was empty? What does the monitor show? I still think that is the overflow tube. If you could hear the pump running than the tank had water in it. How much?
