Ive never drank water from tank supply.. just me. Could be hose deterioration perhaps water pump seals deteriorating too. Really dont think its tanks if cleaned as you described.

Can you isolate.. hot or cold side.. hot water...

Can you isolate.. hot or cold side.. hot water heater may need cleaning if on hot side.
