Not enough?

Hello all. Still trying to finalize the purchase of our 2017 Voltage 3970. Talk has now shifted to is it enough truck? Most of our ventures are within 100-400 miles in Texas of mainly flat pulling. I am running a 2017 F250 diesel. I am concerned with the weight of this coach, not to mention added weight with tanks half to full and our toys in the back. Dealer says people do it all day with 3/4 ton trucks. I am not looking to change trucks. Worst case I can borrow the old mans 1 ton but seeing what others do and have seen? I want to be safe as possible but not looking to change vehicles.

Ouch! If that sweet 2017 Beast isn't enough. It's such a nice package.

And forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't it possible to add a leaf or something of that nature to get the F250 chassis closer to F350 spec? (regarding additional payload) That new Ford Super Duty frame is wicked stout.

or am I showing my old-school age?

You've got the power, but the braking and stability aren't there. Some dealers will tell you anything to make the sale. I have a 3950 and was required to sign a waiver before driving off the lot and I have a 3500 dually...

Brandon, There are a few guys, that have added a leaf spring on a F250, but most of their Toy Haulers were smaller, Yes your Truck will handle it, most times, I have been in Texas when you guys have wind, and with that large sail, you will want that 350 with Dual wheels, that can handle the weight also.....

Regarding my previous post......

Double ouch!
I'm not one of the big castle-on-wheels haulers around here.
I defer to the gentlemen who posted after me.

They make those duallys for a purpose.
And it appears there are times that even they are not overkill!

You are correct you could add a leaf or two to stiffen up the rear end and take out sag, but no matter what you do the suspension or the vehicle for that matter you can never change the amount the vehicle was legally rated to tow from the factory. in fact if you were to get into an accident and it was determined that you were towing more than the vehicle was originally designed to tow, your insurance company could choose to not cover you.

I tried towing ours with a 2008 Ram 2500 Cummins. Installed Firestone air bags, Hellwig stabilizer, Bilstein shocks and Nitto tires. Would tow all day long just fine. The suspension just wasn’t good enough though, always moving, bouncing, the tail was wagging the dog. Towed RVs for 30 years and this was just uncomfortable. After the first 2,200 mile round trip to Florida, I kissed the ground when we got home, and traded for a dually.

yes i think it will tow it but safely im not sure.. I have a 3200 loaded to the gills with toys etc and sag pretty good in the rear of my f250. As mentioned before adding an additional leaf and block will bring u to f350 specs and give u a stiffer ride in the rear. So will airbags but i am not sure i would want to tackle much more with mine. Stopping is the same as a f350 single wheel as all the parts of a f350 and f250 are identical except for the leaf spring and block.. I have researched it extensively on a single wheel drive not a duelly.
I have towed mine all over the mountains and valleys and feel i am maxed out really when totally loaded.
Would it tow it..?? sure Would it stop ... sure is it safe.... I would say probably not..

I can't speak to your model year F250, or current production specs. When I had a 2002 F250, in addition to more leafs and different sized blocks in the rear, the F350 also had a beefier (stronger) front axel. There may be other suspension component differences. Not all the weight is on the rear, it's spread across the truck chassis. Adding leafs, or air bags does not turn a 3/4 into a 1 ton truck. Towing our Voltage 3105 (similar size & weight to a 3200) is night and day different from the F250 to our F350 dually.

Oh I totally agree.. a duelly will out perform a single rear wheel axle any day.. but according to the ford diesel forums I am on, they sometimes talk about this exact thing. Making a f250 as beefy as a f350. Members who work for ford state they have researched it extensively as i have somewhat, and all the parts in a 350 single wheel have the same part numbers as a 250 ford. Now I do not work for ford and never have however, given these ford employees are telling the truth then this is what I have learned. The extra leaf spring and taller block is the only difference they can find. No i am not saying you have a 350 if this is added, I am only stating you have the certified capabilities of a f350 is this modifications are added.

As noted, the winds here in Texas can make a difference in what you pull with. We made a trip last year to Palo Duro Canyon and we had to have at least a 30 mph cross wind. I was fighting it through half the trip from DFW. I have been thankful on several occasions that I traded up to a F350 DRW.

Same here. Traded in my 2500 diesel with helper bags, upgraded tires etc for a 3500 dually.

With the pin weight there is no way you can safely tow a 3950 with single rear wheel. Even upgraded tires cannot handle the payload.

One main difference is how many long bed F-250's have you seen? There is a difference between longbed & shortbed tow ratings. I had my F-350 SRW LB before I bought my Voltage. I bought the Voltage to fit the truck. Yes in strong side winds I slow from towing at 62 or so to 55. My F-350 also has the camper package. I would not tow a three axle Voltage with a single rear wheel truck!

This is mostly right for the older truck as long as you have the same gear ratio the main difference is a stiffer rear suspension. On newer truck this changed a bit since they released the j-2807. RAM restricts the higher ratio to the dually now as they towing capaciry is related the payload.
