EGT Gauge Installation

Upon reading what was posted on the Forum as well as the internet, I think I want to have an EGT system installed. However, I'm not as handy as many of you, and after reading the installation process (drilling into the manifold and what can happen if shavings fall thru), I want to have it done. I have a 2015 F-350 diesel dually and is almost brand new, so I don't want to jeopardize the warranty. Is this something the dealer can do? if not, what kind of shop, as well as what kind of cost am I looking at? Thanks,
Rusty

I've done quite a few of them. Just use grease on the drill bit and tap. Also, do it with the engine running, it blows the chips right out. Who was that guy on tv that said "you can dooo itt"

^^^ x2. Very easy

Diesel manor sells a nice gage and will provide the premade harness for you if you like. I got my triple stack gages from them with premade harness.

That was Richard Simmons what said that but I doubt he drilled a manifold:l ol:

STOP!!!!

You have a 2015 F350....you have 4 EGT probes already installed....look into an Edge CTS, it is not a tuner, but plugs into the OBD port... You can monitor a whole crap ton of information, plus you have a no kidding visual of when a regeneration cycle is actually occurring.

I currently monitor all 4 EGT sensors, coolant temp, transmission temp, DPF load, boost pressure, DEF %, amongst others. When regenerating, there is a flashing red R at the top of the screen...

Thanks Cale. Follow-up question. When I scroll thru all my fields and dash gauges, I see the turbo boost gauge, DEF level, coolant temperature, and transmission temperature. Don't know what "DPF Load" is (told you I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer), but I don't see a reading or gauge for EGT. Am I missing it or do I need to add something. Thanks, and have a safe trip!

Disregard. Re-read your information. I'll look into the CTS Programmer. Thanks again.

Their web site is edge products.com

They do sell programmers, but I use only the CTS monitor. I currently use the original CTS, now they have a CTS 2, which looks to be somewhat nicer...

I used this same one when I had my Duramax, I did install an EGT probe, which I monitored with this also...there are all kinds of doo-dads that can be added, such as a turbo cool off timer....

As far as the probes installed, they are all post turbo, 1 is pre DOC (Diesel Oxydation Catalyst), 2 is pre SCR (Selective Catalyst Reduction), and 3 and 4 being pre and post DPF...

Granted, none of these are in the manifold, but the information is still good...these were the sensors that were failing and leaving folks stranded on the Gen 1 6.7.

The CTS can also read/reset codes if needed.

Not to hijack - post turbo temp is important for properly cooling down after towing, but you really need to monitor pre-turbo EGT to avoid smoking the turbo and it's bearings...you'll actually find yourself starting to use this EGT for shift points more than you ever will for RPM again. It's that important.

Don,

Completely agree with that, as that is exactly how I drove my 2005 Duramax. I installed a manifold EGT sensor and monitored with the CTS...I have not bothered with this truck as I think it is hard to get the temps up to the point of torpedoing one of these new turbos. The 2015 6.7 turbo is 33% larger than 1st Gen 6.7. Moves a lot more air. My first EGT rarely breaks into the low 800s except when running a regen....

I tend to run mine a little harder than some. I have a few mods and software so when towing and rowing thru the gears it is not usual to see 1200-1300 for short periods until at cruising speed where I then settle into 700-900 range. Certainly agree with you on newer VGT turbos but I refuse to run the newer ones as they are so choked by our friends at the EPA. My '05 5.9 Cummins pulls circles around some of the newer trucks plus I have no CAT with no codes due to no sensors. Don't get me wrong, I love the newer diesels too but I like to tweak on mine to much and that doesn't play well with CO2 stuff.

I agree, really no need to tap the manifold if you're running a stock truck. They have been engineered to not get to a point of catasprophic failure. If they do get to that point there is another issue. And time you add for fuel or timing then it is certainly worth having pre turbo EGT's

Yep. But I added fuel with a box, wicked diesel inferno, injectors, etc...so when you start running mods it's insurance

I bet your truck pulls like a raped ape! I ran EFI Live through my Edge CTS on my Duramax...it was an awesome setup for sure. If I had kept the truck, I would have needed to upgrade the Alison in it. We would be on long grades pulling up hill, it would slip and go into limp mode...

I have read about folks with the Ford 6.7 successfully removing DEF, DPF, and all the rest successfully for about $2,500... May be an option in the future, but until I am done moving around, I will just stay put.

When I first got to CA, we were still using DOD decals to get on base, part of that process was in CA was to get your vehicle smog checked...some kind of agreement with CA, guess what, mine did not pass, , I just waited until we did away with those before I started driving on base again.

We recently got rid of our DOD decals as well but no emissions testing here thankfully

OK boys....I have searched and searched on the 6.7L Dodge and cannot find any information regarding factory EGT. I too am going to purchase the Edge CTS and was going to install the probe, but if there is a factory probe already installed I'll just have to purchase the CTS and plug it in....any ideas?

Ewacowboy, Your dodge will have pre and post dpf pyrometers (egt) installed if it is completely stock. The CTS will work just fine for your application aswell. I ran a cts on my stock 2011 cummins before and after doing deletes. You are good to go.

Thanks! I think I'll order this weekend. Now I need to decide on the original CTS or the new CTS2....any experiences?

I have the original, but if I were you I would go for the CTS2 unless you can get a heavy discount on the original .
