Dually Tires

Have to start shopping for truck tires. I have 17 inch tires on my truck. What are you folks using for dually tires? I was thinking of going with an all terrain tire this time, with the hopes of improving some winter performance, but from doing some reading, it sounds as though the sidewalls flex under heavy loads on a lot of the options. I normally spring for Michelins on all my vehicles, but I don't see them on a lot of dually trucks, more of the Goodyear, General Grabber, and some random off the wall brands...

Current tires are General Grabber highway tires. They are OK, only 30k on them, but tread depth is about 5/32.

Thanks,

Cale

Truck Tire Replacement

Looking forward to responses. My Ford dually came with General's. 15,000 miles and so far look good. While I have he alignment checked periodically, I don't rotate. Other than front, side to side, does anyone rotate?

I don't know what works best in the 17" size. I ran Coopers on my 16" wheeled dually. Moho had Michelin LTX on it.

I had mine rotated at 10k...$120 later, I decided it wasn't cost effective over the life of the tires. If I had all steel rims, I would feel differently, as there is no need to dismount and mount tires.

My rear tires wore very flat, uniform, and square...looked nice, when they rotated, the put the fronts to the inside rear...I have read somewhere that by the time you rotate tires this way, there is a height difference in the tires, thus the taller inside tire is carrying more weight than the smaller outer...possibly causing tire failure.

I have not rotated mine since.

My 14 Ram came with Nexen. Never heard of them before, always used Michelins on previous trucks. So far they still look new with only a little over 15K on them. I rotated them myself twice so far using the “normal wear” rotation pattern since I have steel wheels. I’m having trouble understanding how rotating them could cause failures since the difference in wear would be nearly undetectable if doing a six tire rotation, but hey, who knows? Unequal pressures in the rears would seem to be more of a problem which is why I’m OCD about it (thankfully my TPMS is accurate). At this point I’ll probably replace them with more Nexens when the time comes since the price difference is significant and they are working well for me. Time will tell…

I read about the difference in wears on the powerstroke forum or the diesel stop forum...cannot remember...for the record though, I don't rotate due to cost. If I had to pay $120 each time to rotate, I would end up spending the same amount of monies for a full set of tires by the time I have to replace.

I looked up Nexen tires, they look like a quality tire, but none of the truck tires are in my size.

I hear you, I would not be rotating either if I had the aluminum wheels. I wonder if another aluminum wheel would work on the inner rear? Just curious... would maybe get scratched up bad?

At least for Ford, the aluminum alloy wheels are thicker than the steel wheels, the rear cannot take two alloy wheels.

Also, when I had mine rotated, the dealer neglected to put the center caps on secure...lost them somewhere between Texas and Iowa. $200 to replace those, which has not happened yet.

My 2013 Chev 3500 has Michelins and because the inner wheel is steel, I don't rotate...I have about 28K and they still look new..Front tires are at 70lbs, rears are at 65lbs....

I think I rotated one time and decided it wasn't worth the hassle. What a lot of the guys around here do is put a premium tire on the steer axle and a heavy tread all terrain on the rear. I ran the same on both axles, IIRC I would replace them all about the same time with pretty equal wear.

Cale you mentioned wanting better traction? I used to get stuck on flat ground if it was muddy enough... mine was a two wheel drive and without a load on it was prone to that.

Have had Cooper 17" on mine towing for 5 summers and still look great. Only rotated one time to get the "rounder" wearing fronts swapped out with my "flatter" wearing rears.

It's off topic but i heard some folks mention they ran the inside rear tire with less pressure (Like -3 PSI) to help with the wear. Apparently this is due to the road not being entirely flat. Has anyone heard of this, are you doing it?

Which Cooper tire? They have quite a large selection of tires for trucks.

Can't say these are what I'd have bought as this is my first dually, but they were new on the truck when I bought it and so far happy. Discoverer A/T3

Great, have read some good reviews online concerning those. Have you noticed any flexing or sway when towing? I am wanting an AT tire to cope with winter....reviews say they perform well in wet and dry.

My other tire I was looking at was the General Grabber HTS60....replaced the OEM, new tire, not many reviews. The Cooper is actually cheaper at Tread Depot.

You said these are not what you would have purchased, what is it you would have bought?

Sorry for all the questions, I tend to nuke these things before I buy.

I've never noticed any issues. Use them up north hunting as well. I like them just fine. I am bagged as well so many not feel any minor things that are going on but still not enough to notice anything unusual
