Louie,

Many campers swear by LT tires with one of the favorites being the Michelin XPS Ribs.

XPS Rib | Michelin Tires

I think you are on the right track with the Maxxis ST tires, especially if you can get them at a local Discount Tire which offers the best warranty service in the tire business!!!

Don't think you are going to find that size 245/75r16 in a load range F. 235/85r16 Goodyear G114 are made in that load range. & will take 110 psi.

Referring to the first post with your math calculation, keep in mind that your truck bed and 5th wheel hitch take a couple thousand pounds of trailer weight, so your trailer tires don't take all the weight of the trailer.

I went to the dealer today to look at a friends new trailer, a Solitude. I think most would agree Grand Design is a high end line of trailers.

I felt a little better about the Westlake 16' load range E tires on my Voltage when I saw the same tires on the Solitude.

Then my bubble burst when I looked at the Grand Design Momentum Toyhauler setting beside it, also with Westlake tires... stock 17.5's!!!

When I first saw the Chinese Westlake's on my Voltage my thought was that those POS's have got to go...and they were gone before our first trip.

Yea,

My Westlake tires have got to go too... about 10,000 miles so far.

They will be gone this winter, I am going to replace them with 14 ply Sailuns, another Chinese tire!!!

The first post on this thread was 5/2012. It is now the end of February 2015. I have read thread after thread on forum after forum about manufacturer after manufacturer and it is all the same story. The same tires continue to be installed on almost all TT and 5ers regardless who makes them or what level of quality the unit occupies. They continue to install the same marginal tires and owners continue to replace them with tires and in some cases wheels and tires that could have been installed at the time of manufacture probably for less than we can due to the price point the manufacturer can likely get them at. So my guess is that with this continuing for so many years it is now Standard Manufacturing Practices and it is not going to change. One manufacturer actually offers the 16 inch Goodyear tires as an option! That is almost a slap in the face. Rant over.

I have had 5 RV's and the last 2 have Tires from China, one set on a Fuzion had tires that hold 110lbs of Air, My new Voltage 3895 had tires from China, and we have traveled about 4,000 miles so far, they hold 80lbs of Air. One thing I have learned is NO Matter What after 5 years on any Trailer and even if new looking, change the tires. I learned that from 2 blow out in one trip. When I store the RV, I lift the unit up, so the tires don't get a flat spot. I had Goodyears on one and didn't have any trouble over 5 years, so who know? That one weighted 15,000 lbs, my new one loaded is close to 20,000lbs. I will wait and see??

I have always replaced my RV tires after 5 years as well as monitor tire pressure and visually inspect them. I am commenting on the continued practice of selling new units with tires that are barely capable or maybe not quite capable. I have replaced Michelin RIBS that looked brand new because they were past the 5 year date. Something is just wrong about buying a new TT or 5er and feeling the need to replace the tires on the way home. No one would do this unless they believed it was a genuine concern. Note that there is never any comments from any manufacture on any thread concerning this. Now make a general post asking where you can find a particular unit and watch how fast you will get a response from the manufacture. Just saying. It is obvious they feel there is no need to address the concern.

Follow the money... using quality anything would cut into their profit margins. They use the "out" that the tires meet the DOT requirements, and if you have a problem contact the tire company for all warranties. Good luck with THAT!

I contacted Goodyear with my tire failures. Only got one replaced under warrant. That one had spit the tread off so I still had the tire. All the others had major blow-out so there was nothing left. One caused over $4,000 worth of damage. They wanted to see the tire. I told them it was all over the road in pieces. As there wasn't any thing to check yea as Aaron stated Good luck with that. American made tires & I lost all five + the warrantied one within four years.
I moved up to 17.5 Hankooks & problem was fixed.

I don't get the follow the money part. A120k toy hauler discounted 25% or 125k discounted 25% with 17.5 inch wheels and tires. I would buy the latter.

You would, but would the uniformed everyman even consider purchasing one that cost 5k more? Too many people in the US shop price and little else, and the manufacturers are more than happy to provide. Then they have the shareholders to answer to, they expect profits regardless. It is a downward spiral. All you can reasonably do; is do your due diligence and Caveat Empor.

I've never run any ST tire, Chinese or not, on either of my 5th wheels. My first trailer was an Everest that I put Michelin's on immediately. My Voltage also got Michelin Ribs immediately. Thanks to this forum and other rv forums, I've learned enough not to ever run a Chinese made trailer tire. Apparently the manufacturers either don't know what we know or don't care. Based on the lack of quality control in the building of our trailers I must conclude they don't care.

I agree with you, When you spend that amount of money, you want good tires, My first Toy Hauler only had 4 tires to replace, but my new 3895 has 6 tires. I guess with the tires and TV's, they can keep the cost down enough?
