Simple hot water drain

Last Fall, I started prepping for winterization and the fact that because of planned Winter trips to warmer climates, I knew I would be winterizing a couple of times, at least.

Read on one of the forums of putting an easy drain on the hot water heater. Now this only works if your hot water heater does not have a zinc anoide in the drain. The one on our Dutchmen does not.

So you pull the drain plug and head off to the hardware store with it. You find a reducer in the plumbing parts that is the same size as the plug threads on the male end of that plug and on the female end you find a size equal to the flexible hoses, that are used from the water supply to a kitchen or bathroom faucette. Get one about 24 inches long, they come in all sizes. On the opposite end from the reducer, you put a simple ball valve and then a plug that fits into the open end opposite the flexible hose. Put it all together with plumber's goop or tape and you got an easy drain for the hot water heater.

Wrap it around in the cavity, so its not near the burner or any of the electronics and it is ready to use. I think I did add a 45 degree elbow to make it lay cleaner inside the hot water control area, but that would be equipment specific. I actually spent more time looking for the parts in the plumbing department than I did assembling and installing it. Have used it 5 times now and it works great!

Re: Simple hot water drain

Is there any way that you can post some pics or a diagram of this? Sounds interesting.

Re: Simple hot water drain

Posting pictures? Do I have to have them loaded in another site and direct to it or is their space here, somewhere?

Picture of hot water drain with hose stored for travel

Picture of hose extended to drain

That's about the best I can do.

Re: Simple hot water drain

Not my idea, I just stole it from somebody on one of these sites. I literally read it, thought it was a good idea, 12 blocks to the hardware, got the parts and had it installed in about 45 minutes. I thought, and still think, it is a great mod, but only works if you don't have the anoide in the drain plug.
