Dry Ice

I was thinking of getting some dry ice to put in my fridge and freezer to give it a boost before I hit the road. My unit comes out of storage a lot of times before use and it takes a while for the fridge to cool down. My wife showed me some information on another forum suggesting that it's dangerous, I guess it forces O2 from the environment? As a kid we used it all the time, however it was in a cooler outside. Any problems with putting a pound or so in the fridge to help it along or does anyone else do it?
Thanks,
Rusty

I don't know about the environmental impact, but I am cheap AND lazy. I just use freezer packs from my home freezer. I have also frozen half gallon milk jugs, used those and when they thaw I have drinking water too. In my experience it doest take a whole lot to get the thing cooled down if you help it out.

Probably makes more sense. As always, thanks Aaron.

Rusty,
For me it is a matter of logistics. The nearest reliable source of dry ice for me is over 20 miles from my house and they are only open during the week, typically 8:30-5:00. Next closest source was a Walmart, but they took it out a while back. So ice jugs it are.

As far as environmental, it is basically a wash. Most dry ice is produced using CO2 that is a by-product of some other process. We used dry ice blasting at work occasionally and I have had to write the environmental impact statements for the projects. Where we come off like the shining stars is that the dry ice blasting replaces a whole host of chemicals and residues that require special handling, with the dry ice blasting typically all you have left is whatever you were blasting off. Prior to switching to the dry ice blasting process we were using a lot of chemical cleaners that were high VOC and in many locales were outright banned.

If you have ready access to it and the cost doesn't bother you, go for it.

Right off the top of my head I don't know of any place around me that has it. Not a So. Cal. kind of a thing.
We start the A/C in ours to cool down the RV. Start the frig two nights before leaving & load the freezer first. Works very well for us.
