AC question

Does anyone know if the AC unit can run on 12 volt alone or does it need to have shore power? We have a 15,500 btu AC unit on our 2014 Kodiak 291 resl.

In order to run on 12v you'd have to have a good size inverter with a charger built in when plugged into shore power, and a couple of huge deep cycle batteries rated with high amp hours. Do you have room for all that? Other slight modifications would have to be made also. IMHO it would be pretty expensive.

You will need the shore power to make the A/C run or a good generator with suficient output.

I have seen a couple of those batteries. My neighbor looks after the Police, Ambulance, Fire repeater station in our town.

The batteries were huge 6Vs that get swapped out just because of the time in service.

He offered them to me before they went to the recyclers, I would have needed 4 times the space that my 2 Golf Cart batteries take up. They must have weighed close to 120#s each.

I had 6 house batteries AGM and they took up a lot of room They would run one of the 3 a.c. units. But not as long as you would think. Stick with the electric. ... or generator.

Thanks for the info everyone. I was tinkering in the trailer last week and did not have shore power hooked up and tried the run the AC. This answers why it didnt run.

Nothing that runs off the 120V AC power, such as the air con or microwave, would work if you're not hooked to shore power (or generator, or inverter).

Typical 12v only has enough pwr to run lights small 12v accessories you might find in your car and start items like fridges and furnaces which use igniters for the lp gas. Fun to tinker with these huge toys.
