Rookie winterizing mistake

I learned a nice lesson about spray ports this weekend, it seems there is a backflow valve in the fitting attached to the back of the port. So when I blew the lines out last fall, I neglected to hook the hose up an purge it. The fitting holds maybe a teaspoon of water in it, just enough to shatter it when it freezes.

So when we took our first trip last Thursday, water began immediately pouring out of the wall over the tires when I turned the city water on. Not a huge deal, just $8 in stupid tax for a metal fitting and an hour of camping lost.

That's why the first trip each spring is near a hardware store! My buddy with a trailer identical to mine did the same thing last year.

I have always carried a few spare plumbing parts... even back in my popup days. First trip out we always seemed to have forgotten something. Plus this winter has been brutally cold (at least for us in NC) I hope to get water on mine this weekend and see what happens.

I would say the toilet is another water tap that is easy to overlook. I have forgotten that one before but thankfully remembered it before things froze.

Dawniewest, I have been sweating this ever since your post. I finally had a chance today to clean and disinfect my water system. And luckily, I did run antifreeze through the outside water connection. No water issues at all!!!

Finally, spring and heading out next weekend for our first trip of the season. I feel like a little kid waiting for Christmas... Only 5 more day..

4 days and counting! I wanted to go bad enough I took a vacation day, just to keep them from them from screwing it up!

I had planned to go a couple of weeks ago, but work got in the way and I didn't get home until too late that Friday night. Probably a good thing seeing how it got down to 22° here last night. which is a good 20° below normal.

Got my first RV in 1985 & have had eight others sense then. But when it comes to winterizing I know nothing about it & don't want to.
Us DesertRats don't like cold weather.
