We bought our 2016 Coleman 192RDS this past January and after taking it out a couple of times this spring I decided to sanitize and flush the fresh tank in anticipation of taking water with us next time. When I switched on the pump it never shut off and I could hear water running........somewhere. It's a small camper so it didn't take but a couple of seconds to determine there was no water flowing inside. I did however find water spewing *out* of the "city water" connection. Ah-ha! Bad check valve. Got online and, God bless Amazon Prime, had a new one delivered on Monday.
Now, I've always been good at patching things and "making do" by hobbling along with all sorts of rigged stuff, so I tought I would have a look at the old plastic fitting & valve. Turns out that the debris screen had been installed with the "convex" side of the screen facing in, and pressing against the check valve, holding it open. I'm guessing it was like this from new and the previous owner never used the on board fresh water and pump part of the system. I installed the new brass fitting/valve (since I had already received it) with the convex side of the screen facing out using butyl tape under the flange, then used elastomeric sealant around the outer edge, and all is well. The screen and gasket seen in the attached photo of the old valve was cut by me when I removed it, the put it back for the photo.....
Wonder how many of these left the manufacturer with the screen installed backward?.....or did the previous owner stick it in wrong once upon a time.....
