Got an appliance load tester today

I love a good toy, especially a reasonably priced one. Went around checking most every thing in the house today. We have to go on generator power here a lot, so I wanted to make sure the mfg's ratings were in the ballpark. I've been told that they aren't always the most accurate, plus I can see what some stuff in the camper pulls. The camper microwave showed a whopping 1650 watts.

Most things were spot on with the posted rating with one big exception, the hair dryer was rated at 1850w and only pulled 950w on high heat.

Just a few things I checked
Computer monitor (older lcd)- 70w
Tower PC with attached speakers and small subwoofer-150w
Cable modem- 15w
Router- 20w
3yo 65" plasma tv-280w that was surprising

And my home coffee maker was a power drain at 1506w

Cant tell how it hooks up???

I use one of these. You have to stick between your outlet and plug.

It has a 2ft cord that plugs into the wall outlet, then you plug whatever you're testing into the back of it.

That is much more convenient. I like it.
Don't have to bend over to outlet height to read it.
Cool!

I use a Kill-A-Watt, it is the same concept as the one ArmyVeteran linked to. I also test out everything and my wife rolls her eyes. Keep in mind that these monitors aren't "fast" enough to catch initial surges in current for items that do this. Think compressors on residential refrigerators or air conditioners. These are quick surges of much higher amperage that the monitor won't catch but your power supply still needs to supply. This is why small generators can't reliably run air conditioners even though steady state operation may show power needs well within the generator capacity.

Good point. Best to just go by the rated amps for big generator killing appliances, that's why i'm eventually going to invest in the micro-air soft start. I almost wish there weren't so many nice campgrounds around here, I want to boondock once!
