Generators-best places to buy

Hi everyone,

What are some of the best places to get great deals on portable generators for RVs? So far Costco seems to have some of the best deals I’ve seen. Honda’s seem expensive everywhere, some places only carry specific brands and some have their own branded generators like etrailer(really a firman cheaper at Costco) What is everyone else’s experience?

Honda (and Yamaha) has set pricing and don't allow much discounting. I have used Honda generators for years on construction sites and have found them worth the price for their durability and repair parts availability.

However if I were buying a generator for occasional use I would take a close look at the Champion generators. My FIL bought one to use at his barn, at the time the best price was from Tractor Supply. Champion has built themselves a decent reputation of a lot of bang for the buck. There are also several online sales places, like Generators Direct that quite often have good pricing.

Don't have a Costco nearby so no clue what they have.

When hurricane Michael came through my area, we were instantly flooded by Generac. They could be found in every store gas station or street corner. They were inexpensive at the time but seemed pretty reliable, ran my 4 for 28 days straight until power was restored.

Would you take a chance on a used one? Craigslist is flooded with them.

Try Harbor Freight, they have quiet generators that compete with Honda. They are about half as expensive. I my self got one on Craig's List. It is a Sears, with Briggs & Stratton engine. Less than ten hours on it and it's rated at 6500 watts. I paid nothing for it since I traded a smaller generator for it that would not run my AC.

I dry camp at a couple events a year. I have a pair of Honda 2000s. They are by far the quietest along with the Yamahas (which I've seen at Costco). Most other generators are obnoxiously loud.

Generator on the way

Bought from Home Depot online...this way I can bring it back easily, if needed. I hate trying to return something through Amazon. There was a price drop, so I jumped on the Westinghouse I gen 4500 inverter generator. It was priced the same as the Harbor Fright Predator 3500 which I also like. However, the Westinghouse is a 4500 watt unit and runs at 52 dBs instead of the Predators 57 dBs. A quiet running generator is more important to me because I have sensitive ears and loud noises bother me. The other thing about the igen 4500 is we can run Everything simultaneously without an issue, in theory. I’ll report back after some break in and test runs.

Believe it or not, but in December, Camping World had a spiff going on the Hondas. With all the discounts, I paid $889 out the door for a Honda 2200i. The lady at the check out did the numbers twice. The store matched their own on-line ad. I'm happy. Very quiet unit. And they gave me a free cover and prepped it as well for free. All spiffs available at the time.

In other words, shop around and take your time. The deals are out there.
