DirecTV in the Desert
Finally figured out how to continue watching DirecTV or a DVD uninterrupted, despite needing to power up the generator, or wanting to power down the generator and 'fail back' to inverter power mid-show.
First I put in a UPS, but the generator power was a bit too wild, and the UPS screamed. So I put in a regulator to preceed the UPS. In the picture, power flows from a Xantrex inverter (not shown) to the AC subpanel breakers on the upper right, to the APC regulator bottom left, then up to the APC UPS mid-left, and from there to the satellite, TV, sound bar (not shown) and the DirecTV and DVD boxes.
All works nicely!

Great idea!
So, how long can that APC power the SAT receiver & TV & sound bar?
Can you get a good movie out of it?

>> The small APC UPS is actually only needed during that split second when the gen powers down, and inverter power picks up. It could run everything for just about 5-10 minutes by itself, but the regulator and UPS are there just for the inv-gen and gen-inv switching.

Ah, I see.
I should have looked closer.
The reason it I got excited about the APC solution is I had never thought about the application in a boondocking situation. I am very familiar with the data-center class APC solutions. They are remarkably sophisticated "packages" and can be sized for all kinds of needs.
I never considered how cleverly they could be deployed in an RV situation. Expensive, admittedly, but completely standalone and simple to put to use.

The UPS was about $50, but what surprised me was it did not like being fed directly from gen power.. maybe it was too 'spikey', and needed the regulator in front of it.. that was about $50 too, but all works smoothly now.

I've had similar issues with my UPS not liking the "quality" of the power my whole house generator puts out. They seem to run fine on my little Honda generator.
I run a UPS in the RV garage to power my cable modem, router, network storage, and IP phone. What regulator did you use? Sounds like that would be a valuable addition both for my RV and the UPS that powers the DVR, and TV in the house.
Thanks
