What wire size would be advised to hook up a second 12volt battery, connecting to original battery. Also, with two batteries hooked together, would the on board charger, which is a WFCO 8955 55amp converter charger, charge both batteries when hooked together?
The wires running from my converter to the battery are 6ga, so I would go with that, 4 ga maybe better, since that is what is running on mine from the battery to ground.

Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large groups.
I was told by my electrical engineers here at work, whom are also big Rv'ers, that the weakest point of your electrical systems should be the fuse but if you use wire that is not large enough to carry the load that will now become the fuse and wires do not make good fuses. I have 6ga on my trailer so I used 6ga.
The heavier the gauge wire between the battery and your charger, the better off you'll be. For my setup I use 4/0.That being said I have a 400 amp fuse for protection. Both of these are a bit big for the average setup, I am merely trying to make a point.

400 amp fuse? That's protection all right, might as well use a penny. All the grounded, shorted and crossed electrical systems in an RV couldn't blow a 400 amp fuse.

actually you are wrong...trust me I am an engineer! haha. No in all seriousness my setup runs at up to 300A continuous under normal circumstances. 400A was the minimum fuse size recommended by my charger/inverter manufacturer. My battery bank would have no issue at all popping that fuse.

Now I understand, you're protecting the battery bank proper and not system circuits.
