Backup camera systems

Coming from pulling tent trailers I'm quickly learning that backing up a 29' trailer through the trees is a bit different. ;-hap

Given that, I'm a bit spoiled driving the Ford Platinum... the 7" Navigation/Back Up camera system... wow...

So does anyone have any recommendations on a backup camera system that I could hook up to the truck, preferably through the accessory inputs on the Ford system (I'd prefer not to have another screen on the dash)? I've heard some of the wireless units don't transmit too well over 20' or so trailer length, have seen a few neat all weather plug hookups for the truck but... honestly, have no idea where to start.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Re: Backup camera systems

I was hoping there would have been a couple of replies to this. It would make life much easier for hitching and backing up the trailer in most of the forestry service sites that are off the beaten path

Hey Grumps.......I am a member of the F150 forum in addition to this great one, and I'll bet if you do a search over there, you'll find lots of helpful information on something like this.

Re: Backup camera systems

I think I've found the wireless camera that I'm going to acquire, ( http://www.swifthitch.com ) I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with it. There are 2 versions, SH01 and SH02 both do the same things just longer battery time and a couple more accessories with the SH02. I want a portable with night vision so that I can use it on my other vehicles. I tow an enclosed trailer for a quad and or snowmobile about 50 to 60 % of the time for work to access some of the more remote facilities that I work at and I think this might be the tool for work or play.

Re: Backup camera systems

I've looked at the portable units and assume they can work from the dash to the rear of a vehicle, but I've always wondered if they worked through the structure of a travel trailer. Anyone have any experience with the portabel units?

Re: Backup camera systems

I have a Swifthitch. It is alright. Sometimes the picture gets a little fuzzy but it straightens out. I can now hitch up the trailer without my wife's help. I have tried it on the bumper of the trailer and gotten a decent picture in the truck. A tailgate camera can't be moved to the back of the trailer. They do need a softer pad and a stronger magnet to protect the paint.
Getting into some camping spots can be an issue and I don't know that a camera is the answer. It would have to have a very wide angle len. It would have to "see" up high to avoid branches trying the rip off the a/c and scrape down the side of the trailer. You still need someone to be watching for those.

Re: Backup camera systems

All good points.....the very first trip with our first TT I put a 18 foot scratch in the gel coat from a branch I did not see on the passenger side of the TT.....Live and learn, right?

Re: Backup camera systems

In 2004 with out first KZ trailer I caught a branch while turning a corner in the campground going less then 5 mph. Tore the awning off the side of the camper, tore the roof and put 3 holes in the fiberglass. Insurance man totaled it. I guess I needed one of those side-view fish finders and not a backup camera...
