Motorcycle Decision Made

Well after much debate, mostly with myself. I have decided to give up riding motorcycles after over 16 years of riding. So I am going to sell my blue 2012 Yamaha Tenere. Gonna miss riding but just not able to do it anymore due to shoulder and elbow pain when riding.

I know the pain, Barry. I sold my Moto Guzzi a few years back because the two of us aren't skinny any more, and can't fit well on the dual seat. I felt selfish taking it out alone. But look at it this way, you outlived the motorcycle, not vice versa! I did get a burning-yearning once, and with a few friends rented a Harley. Took it from Charleston to Myrtle Beach and back. Fun, and yearning satisfied for just a couple of hundred bucks!

I totally respect your decision Barry. It's a personal matter and at some point I may face it too, IF I live that long.

But hopefully someone will SHOOT ME before I can no longer ride.

Honestly, I am old enough to be in some kind of frequent pain. I spread a pallet of St. Augustine sod today and everything aches. I went into the office tonight and had a tough time climbing the stairs.

That 2012 Blue Super Tenere was a PDP (PreDepositPurchase) bike that someone waited a long long time for it to make it to our shores. It's quite a machine. I know because mine is a 2012 Blue Super Tenere PDP bike. lol

(Isn't blue anymore. I painted it to match my helmet)

Anyways, I'm a little broken hearted FOR you my Tenere brother.

Yep, same here but for different reasons. Started riding in the early 70s. Sold the 2005 Royal Star Tour Deluxe in 2011 after the wife became disabled to where she couldn’t ride with me anymore. I figured I had a good long run without any incidents so time to change direction. We bought a golf cart, toy hauler, and a kayak. Oddly enough, she is very comfortable in the kayak, so it works for us. I missed the bike for a while but do not regret the decision today. It was the right thing for me to do too. Things change...

Falling off a ladder 35+ years ago ended my motorcycle riding. Then 6/7 years ago I found a Burgman. Bought a 400 rode it for 46k+ miles & now have a 650.
I'm over retirement age & bad left foot & wrist I can still ride a SCOOTER. Well it's a scooter on steroids.

I got rid of the last of my motorcycles years ago. Got hit a few times to many, figured one of these days there was going to be one that I wasn't going to walk away from. I still have a couple of scooters to play with, but don't ride them on the roads much. I have a Honda CH-125 that is under going a complete rebuild, when I get done with that I will dig the old Vespa 200 Rallye out and give it the same treatment. I also have a line on a Honda CH-250.... We also have several Honda Trail 50's that we play with on the farm.

We sold our 2013 HD CVO 2 years ago because too many of our friends got hurt. Now we ride a Kawasaki Teryx4 and see the country from another perspective.

2005 Ultra I bought new. 160,000 miles. Hardly ride the last few years, in fact this is the first Daytona and Sturgis rally I haven't or won't attend in 20 years. Still can't bring myself to sell it though.

Don't have to feed 'em, don't have to keep 'em warm and only have to talk to 'em a little so why not have a remnant of the past?

We came to the same decision sadly last summer. After neck surgery and losing strength in my right hand I just didn't feel safe going down the road on our 2003 GoldWing. We sold it and our Pop-Up last summer and upgraded the camper to the 213RBSL. Not the same kind of fun, but still fun!

PS I have been riding since I was 13 years old. Here is a shot of the Wing and my pride and joy back in 1979 our 1974 Norton 850 Commando Interstate.

its sad to see fellow riders not being able to enjoy the fruits of their lives. I too am getting on up in age, almost 70, yet still am able to ride my 2010 goldwing. We take it almost everywhere we go in our toyhauler and then it becomes our main mode of transportation.. Do I hurt.. hell yes.. I take an ibuprofen or other pain relief and continue on.. I suppose I will migrate to a three wheeler at some point.. I refuse to throw in the towel just yet.

Well, since we're on the topic, I'm still on the fence about my riding...

Most of you know about the auto accident I had last year that ended my season, and the subsequent laminectomy/fusion surgery in my neck & spine. It's been a slow recovery that's still continuing.

While I still don't have full use of my right arm, I can physically ride the bike. It's just not comfortable. There's a lot of pain in my neck, and down through my shoulders as I stretch my arms forward out to the handlebars... while simultaneously holding my head up to look forward. Wondering if that's ever going to go away is where the jury's still out on my riding future.

Still, that's a big reason I've got my Goldwing up for sale, and listed on the classifieds here. Even if I am able to ride again, I'm not sure I'll need a big touring bike like this anymore.

I remember when you had your accident.. I am sadden your still not recovered .. just a a fluke have you tried handlebar risers.?? I used to hurt in the shoulders and neck. I put risers on my bars which pull them together and raise them . It takes all the pressure off my shoulders, i sit up straighter and less pressure on my neck.. just a thought if you have not tried that.

I do have risers installed, but they aren't doing the trick. The issue is bringing my right elbow forward in any manner at all. Just moving it forward from parallel to my side brings pain from my shoulder to the elbow... and the farther forward I bring it, the worse the pain gets. So you can imagine how slow speed turns to the left make it feel.

Only time will tell, I guess...

My last one was a 2006 VTX-C. I still get the urge. I do miss it.

I can relate.... sold my Wing last April, and been traveling without it this summer. Still have shoulder discomfort, but really miss riding.

The hardest of traveling for me these days is... where to go, and what to do? I know that sounds crazy, but for the past 20 years my entire travel life has focused around... where do I wanna go ride? I know it's still early, as I've only been back on the road for 3 months now... but now that I'm not riding, I'm finding this full-time traveling gig isn't as fun.

I sure hope that changes...

I gave up on 2 wheels some time ago. But I moved on to 3 wheels and am really glad I did. Less room in the garage when loaded, but it sure is fun.

ATCguy, I know that day is coming for me too.
I can only imagine how much of a subtraction from life\adventure that decision would afford.

In other words, I really sincerely empathize. I take 1 or 2 bikes with me wherever I go. Admittedly I don't ride them as much as I did in previous decades. But I don't go more than a few days between rides when I'm camping. It is so much a part of the experience for me.

Dr. Buck may be on to something?
I know that 3rd wheel changes SO MUCH, but that open air perch on top of the horse beats sitting in a cage!

Hope the fun returns for your "on the road" lifestyle.
