Trailer light ground problems

Just picked a 2013 voltage 3200
Had no trailer lights
Found I have good ground and signal on wires just behind the battery where they enter the frame and head towards rear of trailer.
Back at the tail light I have good signal but no ground gave up searching for the ground and cut the ground wire just behind tail light spliced a eyelet into it and bolted to frame
All lights are working now but would really like to know where I lost the ground so I can fix right
Any ideas????

Don't be surprised if you find a cruddy 3M connector somewhere along the line. They like the 3Ms exposed to the elements.
