SPARES, not tires

We all carry spares in our rigs for when that 'just in case' day comes.
We have spare fuses, plumbing connections, pumps and all sorts of back up stuff.

How many of us carry a spare waste ball? You know, it's that white thing in the toilet that opens when we smash the foot handle.

The reason I bring this up is because my waste ball broke this morning. Not after cleaning the machine of course, but instead leaving me with a bowlful of stuff and more water than necessary needing to be dipped out so I could see what the problem may be.

It appears as if the dog on the side of the ball broke. The dog engages with the waste ball driver that is operated by the foot handle.

For 20 bucks I ordered a kit that has the ball, some washers and two gaskets. Everything needed to replace the broken ball, complete with instructions.

Now I ask you, would this kit not be a good idea to have as a spare? Most of us can use the 1/2 bath or go outside but having the main thing out of service just plain stinks.

And some of us don't even have that 'spare' 1/2 bath...

So yeah, something else to put on my shopping list.

What's a "half bath" Mine is only about 1/4 sized to begin with!

I would go outside or use the local bath house... if there happens to be one.

In all my years I have never (knock on wood) had a toilet fail in the field. I have had some water lines come loose from the rear, and had a foot pedal break off, but never a ball valve.

This is the first breaker for me. I'm sure the breakage was caused by letting the foot pedal slam shut thereby stressing the ball parts. I try and not let this happen but maybe it doesn't take too many times to kill the ball. It seems as if I remember the older balls having a larger square drive that was spring wound. These new guys have a driver screwed to them so the bulk isn't there anymore. It's pretty small and apparently somewhat delicate.
My standing room only bathroom is better used for storage than its normal intention.

My list of spares does not include a toilet repair kit, but it does include,
· The tools and knowledge to change the TV tire and checking to be sure the release mechanism is not rusted shut.
· The jacks, blocking and stand jacks needed to change a TT tire and the practice and knowledge to do so.
· A small 120 volt air compressor.
· Torque wrench.
· Extra Gas in a good leak proof gas can.
I have at one time uses all of these and they are the difference between an annoying 20 minute delay and being that old couple stranded on some side road waiting for road service to find them.

If you can buy it at Wal-Mart it is simply an inconvenience till you get to the next big town.

My 3895 is closed for winter, but my old Truck Camper is still being used in winter, and I just fixed my toilet, it wouldn't hold water anymore, changed all the seals, and the same thing your talking about, but this one didn't have the ball, it was flat, easy to take apart, I spend more time removing the 2 screws that hold the toilet, good luck Sundancer,
