Potable Water

I keep my trailer at a storage facility. I don't have any high hopes that I can maneuver my trailer to my house (standard residential road that actually has a 90 degree turn ... where people park on both sides of the curve, naturally).

Anybody here in this situation? Where do you fill your fresh water tank?

Storage facility doesn't have water. I'm sure the water spigot at the local Pilot dump station isn't potable water (ew).

Any ideas other than buying gallons of water from the store and using a funnel?

We aren't big fans of drinking out of the tank, no matter where the water comes from. Do you drink bottled water at home? I'd just fill up at the closest Pilot to your destination and take a case of water to drink. You can also buy a filter that fits on your garden hose when filling your tank if you choose to drink out of it.

Any state or county campground, most RV facilities like Camping World, etc., however best advise is probably dawniewest, which is by a case of Costco water and a gallon or two from old milk gallons to flush the toilet until you get to a campground.

Pam, this is a tough one. We do drink from the fresh water tank, but at least two or three times during the season, and especially at the beginning, we pour in two cups of bleach, and fill to overflow. Then there is the slow process of draining and refilling, at least twice, until the taste of bleach is gone. You're not going to be able to do that at the campground, your fresh water tank drain would be all over your campsite. Bottled water for drinking seems to be the best answer for now. How do moving vans get to you and your neighbors? There ought to be a way!

One of the smartest additions I made to my rig was a 5-gal water cooler, and Igloo ice maker that sits on top. It is the source of all my drinking & cooking water... and I'm one of those guys who always has a mug of ice water handy.

Now, that said... if you need water in the tank for the toilet, shower, kitchen sink, etc... many Interstate Rest Areas have a hose available. It not, any truck stop that accommodates RV's will have a hose you can get potable water from.

Thanks folks!

I will be dry camping 90% of time, so I need water in my tank, even if I don’t plan on drinking it (which I do).

I do have two state parks quite close to my home as well as two RV places between me and the highway (Camping World isn’t one of them) all in addition to the Pilot at the highway.

There’s also a local campground that I could probably utilize a few times a year to shock the system if I needed to.

BUT, I’ll have to keep an eye on that corner more, though. My neighbor used to have a Hawaiian Ice trailer and I don’t think he ever had a problem getting it into the neighborhood … and yes … each week we have large trash and recycling trucks (which back in, because it’s a dead end street and there’s no place for them to turn around!)

I have to remember that even though the trailer seems huge to me (as I’ve never owned/towed a trailer before), it’s not any bigger than my van. Definitely a learning process!
