Good News (for us anyway ) is that it is starting to track further south. We are going to get 35-40 mph winds gusting to 50 mph and a crap load of rain. If it had stayed on the original track it would have been worse.

Got the RV fully stocked and ready. We have to stay due to two sets of aging parents. Fortunately being 90+ miles inland from Wilmington has it's perks.

We are directly in the path at this moment. But 100 plus miles inland. Expecting under 40 mph winds here. And 4-8 inches of rain. We get that from one of our big thunderstorms. So we are fortunate.

I feel for the folks in the path of the storm but why should I, living in the desert, have to pay for some millionaires house on the beach when the storm hits and puts it under water?

I don't have a millionaires house but if it gets blown away, i qualify the same as the millionaire. I suppose you are speaking of the insurance. I know you live in the desert so apparently, you have never priced flood insurance. I feel for anyone's home that gets damaged in a storm like this. Fortunately, I can afford insurance. When Hurricane Sandy hit, most of those folks were not rich, they had lived in their homes forever.

I was always curious as to the mind set of someone who would live in an area where it was more than than possible for a natural disaster? I don't get it. My wife's Facebook is littered with people from Florida that brag nonstop on how good the weather is (in relation to the North, where they're invariably from), and then.. every year, were headed down there with supplies to save them. Visit the beach, don't live on it.

Seems like most places in the US have some form of natural disaster. Earthquakes in California, volcanoes in pac north west and Yellowstone, floods and tornadoes all over the south as well as mid west. Hurricanes in the south east and massive rains and flooding in northeast plus the inevitable nor easter major snow storms too.

What place is immune to natural disasters?

I always tell people how bad it is here, that way they may not come here to live... fat chance!

I forget the exact statistics but someone can look them up, but the majority of homes rebuilt with federal money (not federal loans) resulting from flood are repeat victims, many of them up to 10 times in the past 30 years. Should be a one and done program. After that, you're on your own or have to get private flood insurance.

Here in Florida, they redesigned the 100 year flood plan and MOST of Florida is in a flood prone area.

Once you have gotten "damage" from flooding, I am sure your next renewal premium reflects that. I am in an area that may be flooded once in a hundred years... the lowest of the risk areas for flooding. After a disaster, if you are eligible for a low-interest federal loan, I think you still need to pay it back? But who knows.

It's saturday morning. The storm visited there on Thursday and it's still in the same place. The amount of rain they are getting must be gigantic...

I liked the video of the fake news of the hurricane. Showed a reporter on the Weather Channel bracing the high winds and then a couple of guys come strolling by in the background. All hype. Yes there's going to be some flooding and some damage but it's nowhere near what was hyped. And the media is trying to keep the hype going. Sad.

Anybody got a good deal on a boat?

We have had about 6.5" of rain and still have another 24 hours or so to go.

Power was out for about 17 hours due to quite a few downed trees that took out a few transformers. Our awesome line crews from South River EMC got it taken care of.

Everybody makes their choices on where they want to live. I don't do dry heat.

As far as building on the barrier islands that is a matter of politics and too much money in many cases.

As far as Florida is concerned, there was a statement made by an Army Officer that was sent down there to squelch the Seminoles. His comment was basically that; it was a bug infested hell hole and the US would be well served by putting a fence at the border and letting the alligators and Seminole keep it!
