Extended Warranty

OK, you guy's freaked me out and made me do something I have NEVER done before... Not at Best Buy, Not at the Ford or RV Dealer and Not at the Title Company.

I bought a 6 year extended warranty from Good Sam with a $500 deductible and tire coverage for $325.00 a year.

I'm on my forth new trailer of three different brands and in the last seven years all together I've filed one warranty claim for a $2 water heater bypass valve because I couldn't find the drip.

I haven't had any trouble so far, but now I am absolutely not going to worry about my slides. That's worth $325 alone.

Did I read somewhere that slides weren't covered under the Good Sam warranty?

Who knows when it comes down to having to use it.

Cut & Paste from my emailed contract...

COVERED COMPONENTS
16. SLIDE OUT ROOM UNIT(S) –Coverage for the slide out room unit(s) includes but is not limited to the following: All mechanical, electrical and hydraulic components, including generator slide out. Excludes the following: Wooden or metal structure, slide-out room(s) weather seals, sealing boots, and awning fabric.

So, it sounds like I may not have coverage if the slide room swells, but the mechanical components are covered.

I don't plan to use it, I've had homeowners insurance since 1983 and never used it... I'm gonna call it my peace of mind policy, so now when I read about someones slide problems, I won't worry.

Yep, I understand about not planning on using it. I've had life insurance for years and haven't used it yet.

I looked at GS extended warranty and that very same paragraph you posted is what made me decide to keep my money.

Did anyone read the sample contract????

I'd love to have an extended warranty but not with the terms listed......WOW they actually scared me more than mechanical issues while on the road.

Or is it just me!?!

Nope not just you.

I got bit once with the "extended rip off" about 30 so years ago. Ever since that time when I was told "sorry that's not covered", my money says in my bank account. I figure over the years I am up about $10K by declining the offer of extended warranties.

The dealers push these things because there is big profit in them for the dealer.

If I had bought a warranty on my used Infinity, it would probably still be in the shop and I'd never get to use it. It was just easier for me to fix all the window leaks, replace a slide hydraulic cylinder due to 'drift', rebuild the bed platform, fix one of the electric brakes, etc. etc. The dealer wanted $5k for a seven year warranty. When I told the finance guy 'no', he was willing to cut that price by $2k and I still didn't take it. So far it has cost me my time and about $250 for parts ($200 for the cylinder). I'll keep my fingers crossed for the future. I also understand that not everyone out there is mechanically inclined or willing to do the labor, but the time a trailer is out of service and getting fixed at the dealer's shop costs the consumer also.

I've passed on every extended warranty that has ever been offered to me. On the Voltage it was over $3000 up front to the dealer for five years coverage... then you paid interest in your note on top of that.

The Good Sam email caught me in a weak moment after reading all the sob stories. The $325 a year pay as you go, works out to around $25 a month. That's about what I spent on ice last weekend. If I can spend that much for a cold beer, then just the "Peace of Mind" thinking I have coverage is worth as much.

PS Sundancer, We're all gonna need our Life insurance someday... Let's just hope it's not anytime soon!!!

Look! We can go over this topic over and over. Extended warranties have their pros and cons. I know people personally that have had luck with extended warranties but, not without screaming the loudest. And others without the slightest resistance. It is what it is folks extended warranty. You pay for it you demand it when necessary and be relentless until remedies are resolved. One major event can pay for the warranty in full believe that. Just do a little home work on your own and youll see that they're not all bad.......NOT EVERYONE IS BAD....

The missus decided that we needed the extended warrantee. After 35 years, I know when to shut-up sometimes.
