Broken windows

Hi folks. My wife and I were returning from a camp last weekend when we encountered a 20 km stretch of the highway under construction. It was gravel and quite rough, by the time we got through it we had lost two windows, from either rocks or vibration.

Has this happened to anyone else, seems kind of random to me?

Now I have to find some replacements. It's a 2014 Kodiak 241rbsl so the frames are still in good shape. Do I need to replace the entire window (frame and all) or will a shop replace just the glass?

Kind of frustrating but such is life.
Don

I I hope I read it right that you were returning home I would call around to some glass shops to see about temper glass replacements if they're gentle with the seals it should be no big deal to replace the glass

Glass shops can't cut tempered glass, it has to be ordered and made at a factory.
In this case it might be cheaper and quicker to just replace the entire window and frame.

It's probably tinted also. I agree with Sundancer, sucks but you should probably try to replace the entire window. Do you have insurance?

Thanks folks, that's what I was afraid of. Yes, I was returning home, I duct-taped them closed until I got home.

I should have mentioned that these are the vent type windows, the glass itself isn't in a frame, they have clips on the top and bottom that hold the glass and pull it against the seal. They are tinted and tempered.

I guess if glass cutters can't cut this glass I will have little choice but to order the whole window. Damn, expensive trip.

you may be able to still get them from the MFR. it's worth a call but it looks like you will need to replace the entire window...

The normal style used by what's their name. If you call, as Frank mentioned, they will probably ask for a model number on the window.
To find the number you will have to remove the window to find the sticker on the frame. You'll need the number also if you have to shop for one.

That's probably why they can't and won't.

I may be wrong, but I believe the only plausible way to cut tempered glass is with a high powered laser.

So says the Internet; Cutting and shaping glass is the first step in the fabrication process. Tempering is the last. As a result, you cannot cut glass after it's been tempered.

Just a little update. Went to the dealer today, of course I have to order the entire windows. He had me take some measurements for replacements and told me shipping would be expensive. Plus, they will take 3-4 weeks to come from the manufacturer.

Looks like I get to install some windows during a snowstorm. He also told me this happens all the time (windows breaking on gravel road), doesn't seem right to me.

It might be too late for you now but we can order them online and get them in a week or two. Couple hundred bucks or so.

Definitely not a dealer but an online store. I have spent the last 30 minutes looking for the site and haven't come across it yet. This place wants the serial number from your window so it will be an exact replacement.

A member may have it in their notes and post it. I'll look through bookmarks tomorrow, I only have three laptops that I use so it could be anywhere.

Thanks so much for the links folks. I haven't had a chance to go through them yet, we had a tornado go through here yesterday and I just got my power back. But a cursury look makes me think it will give me some great options. Thanks again.
