Spare tire hoist

I removed the spare from the rear bumper in order to mount a storage box there. I got this idea from youtube and it works great.

Yep, they do work well. You want to keep a eye on the cable, I've had the one on the truck fail and it has much bigger than the trailers. I'm just glad it happened on a logging road and not the hiway.

Seems cool, but i'll keep mine on the back where there's 0% chance of it trashing my camper if it flies off. It also adds more tongue weight.

I bought a quality automotive hoist and I designed and built the framing, so I'm quiet willing to accept the 0.00000001% chance of it failing. The weight of the storage unit and contents on the back bumper counters the weight of the spare tire on the front.

I wouldn't store my spare any where but on the tongue, I don't trust that flimsy bumper.

I agree the chances of the cable failing are slim alright. It is something that I had never gave a second thought to, that it could/would break and never inspected the cable for fraying or wear.

It only takes a minute to run it down and inspect the cable and run it back up. One of those life lessons that you learn from and don't let it happen again.
