Fireplace and more

We decided we needed a fireplace in our 2013 3950. Since that year was pre fireplace it was either install a fireplace or spend $80k for a new TH. Opening the wall revealed holding tank vents and wiring so it was not a simple task.
While we were doing the upgrade, somehow tiling the bath got added to the project. We think it turned out pretty well.

Luxury living, you folks in the Big Rigs.

Someday if I ever desire to remodel my bath, I'm gonna pretend it's a big rig and dress it up like that in your picture. Very nice.

Neat location choice. I also saw another member that installed theirs in the backside of the island - now I have a choice to make...

I want to do this!... are there any more pics or tips for doing this, any particular fireplace or size you used. Any thing you would have done differently or opps’s to avoid ?.. thanks in advance for your response.

Cool

Nate,
If you have a 3950 and a curved wall your choices for fireplace size are greatly limited. The one I used is 18 inches wide and only about 4" deep. I had to cut out the wall in the bathroom lower cupboard to get enough depth. Only about 1" but I needed that depth. When I opened up the wall I found 2 holding tank vents and electrical in addition to some flimsy studs. I had to reroute all of that. The fireplace works great and we're really happy with the way it turned out. If you're really handy and understand basic electrical and plumbing it's pretty straight forward.
Footnote...... We went to pick up a Wally Sat Receiver and ended up buying a new Voltage 3970 so my plan to save big bucks with all this work was a great experience but not so much a big $$$$$ saving!
Tom

I have a 3905 which that area is exactly the same, in fact I believe entire unit is the same except for the bed room and I have a 14’ garage instead of the half bath and a 12’ garage... thanks for the info and any other pics you might have... but especially thanks for the measurements of the fire place!

Yeah I can’t find the island fireplace post for the life of me... maybe it’s me but I have search and searched, my wife and I decided we needed a fire place to supplement the furnace as this last week in SC camping it was below 20* a few times and a 750w space heater caused the furnace to kick on half the amount...so it would pay for itself in savings on propane alone.

First off TomW very nice install. I had to fish some wires for our solar in that same wall. And yes there is a lot going on in that little curved wall.

Heres the link to the Island fireplace mod. its in the Mod area #699 (if all else fails)

We have purchased the fireplace for the Island mod, just need a little bit of time to install it.

I’ll have to get on the computer, because that link doesn’t have anything about a fire place, and my phone goes back about 30 pages on the modification section and just spins and won’t go any further.??

Dimplex which came in the 3800 and I installed in a dead fireplace has curved 'plug in' inserts.

This is the one we got. It's curved so it fits our 3950's curved island nicely and it looks surprisingly good, and heats very well. For the price you can't beat it. IMHO

Did you just wire it to the island outlets or run a dedicated circuit?

Donzinger, I replaced our Notcold with a residential refer. I used that power source for the fireplace. Probably doesn't help ya much

Gotcha. Do you have any pics of the unit with the slide in? At just over 5 inches deep, I am concerned with the clearance for the couch.

Thanks!

donzinger, go back to the link I posted (post # 11) for a fireplace install done in a 3950 by another forum member. Scroll down and you can see his pics of the completed install. The fireplace is mounted flush into the island. The curved island wall at the fattest point is 7" deep. Meaning you can cut in the fireplace and not see it from inside the island cabinets.

Thanks! Looks easy enough. What is the bigger hole and grate below the installed unit? The spec sheet indicates that it is top vented. I saw on the product pages (Home Deport site) that there were holes on the side of the unit and the instructions show it being surface mounted only. Are these intakes? I am wondering if they shouldn't be blocked off by being inside the island...Sorry so many questions - just wanting to be sure.
