Question Back-splash Questions

Howdy,

I’m thinking of replacing the backsplash in the kitchen and bath since the stuff that it came with is unattractive and dark. I’d like to brighten things up a bit.

Questions for the folks who have done this; what kind of adhesive/glue works best on the wall material in these units? Does the textured finish of the walls hold up well enough to accept tile? Does the grout hold up with travel and motion?

Any input or advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill T

Regular ole tile mastic will be sufficient for your back splash application. The mastic will stick to almost anything so if the covering on the Luan is clean and in great shape the tile will stay put.

I would think the grout, when applied properly, should stay put. Of course it all depends on the motion of the wall while in motion. Being it's a vertical application there shouldn't be a problem whereas a horizontal application could be problematic due to frame flex and twist.
You can use caulk in place of grout. It's flexible and durable and comes in many colors that are designed for tile.
One note on the grout, unsanded grout is used for joints less than 1/2 inch.

They make some very nice stick on backsplash that a few people on here have used. It's way lighter, faster to install, and no chance of popping off the wall after you hit a pothole.

I used peel and stick Smart Tiles in the bath and kitchen. No problems. Got mine at Lowes:

Actually, unsanded grout is recommended for grout lines 1/8" or less. Not 1/2" or less. I would be hard pressed to add all of the weight associated with tile, grout and mastic, not to mention the possibility of it falling off on the first pothole. I will be doing our back splash in the near future and will use some type of press and stick product.

Well I'll be darned, I didn't even know peel and stick kitchen/bathroom tiles existed until I saw this thread. I had seen pictures of the beautiful kitchens and was thinking how terribly heavy they must be with all the cement, grout and thick ceramic tiles.

Great mod, I think this will be one of the first ones I do.

The peel & stick does sound like a better choice for an RV application I guess. I looked at the peel & stick at Lowes and didn't really like the ones they had on hand. I'll have to check Home Depot. I would be pretty unhappy to have them fall off the wall in transit, which is why I'm asking the questions before tackling the job.

Thanks,

Better yet, check online and save some dough on price and sales tax. However, if you keep asking questions BEFORE you have a problem you could be drummed out of the man club. What next, will you ask for directions??? LOL

Bill,

I have used a product the Home Depot in Canada used to carry. It's called Ceramilite, but I can't remember who makes it. It comes in 4x8' sheets, looks like tile and is water proof. They also have a 5' sheets for tub surrounds. I did a tub surround in our last house, it looked like new after 6 years.

There are no grout lines the try to keep from discoloring, it is easy to clean with dish detergent.

The stuff has a very hard surface layer, I use a carbide tipped arborite knife to make a nice clean edge. I've had good reults using PL Premium sealant to stick it to the walls.

Living in the desert when I installed mine I did use some liquid nails just to make sure.

Correct you are on the unsanded grout. Unsanded up to an 1/8 inch. As it happened I had looked this morning at my mastic/thin set/grout supply to see if I had enough to finish my tile job. Between moving boxes of tile and all kinds of stuff in bags and looking at grout I must have had a transference moment.

Haaaa yes I refuse at ask for directions. That's where I draw the line😀 Anyway I'm at the local, recently remodeled sub shop and they used the self stick tile on their counter. It looks really nice. I'm feeling better about it. Looks exactly like what I was wanting. Subs are pretty good too.

Here is another picture of the Smart Tiles it was fairly easy to install. My backup plan is thin set (4mm) glass tiles.

Thanks for the lead on this stuff, I'll give a look for it. I also need to re-do our bathroom in the house and was looking at this stuff like Corian in 1/4" 4x8 sheets, but that stuff is very expensive for me to go cutting it up, heavy too. What could possibly go wrong?

Looks Good. The glass tiles were my plan "A", but I may just go with the self stick ones and be done with it. After seeing them in person at the pizza shop this evening (what a coincidence) I was surprised at how good they looked. Now if I can just find the exact ones like the pizza shop has...

I think this has got to be funniest thread. It reminds me of a bunch of kids playing in the sandbox.

I have to say them peel and stick are very nice looking. I'm just glad I never got around to doing a Ceramalite backsplash.

Thanks guys, you just added another one to the list!
