Ok folks need some help with traffic. We are going to the Oregon Coast. We will be leaving Van. BC on Sunday 1 June hope to be at the Can/US border crossing at 830 am . First overnight stop is Olympia Wash.
Which would be the best way through or around Seattle,Hwy. 5 or 405?

Thanks in advance for the replies.

I5 works well. It has good carpool lanes and even during rush hour we've never had huge issues.

Do you use a GPS?

I would take the Sumas crossing, go down Hwy 9 to 542 and take that to I5.

Thanks ...the Sumas crossing means we may have to back track from Port Coquitum..most likely use the truck crossing.
we have 2 GPS.... one 2012 model that came with truck and you can turn off the voice commands .. the other is a bit older called the wife using paper maps with no off button.
Thanks again I5 it is in the carpool lanes

Times two with what Gordon said about crossing the border. I'll add that you should listen to (CHMJ AM) AM730... (CHMJ AM) AM730 on your truck radio as that'll give you border waiting times.

Another thought

You probably already know this but just as a reminder that you're going to have a hefty toll if you pass over the Port Mann bridge with a trailer so stay north of the river.

Coops, I thought you'd be coming down from Kamloops which is why I suggested Sumas.
KayakCrazy, you have to get south of the river somewhere, the Golden Ears bridge is a toll bridge too.

Gordon....your right if we were heading from Kamloops we would go through Sumas. However we are overnighting in Port Coquitlam before leaving. Will have to pay a toll at Golden Years bridge but saves time.
Thanks again

Also recommending I 5 through Seattle. On a Sunday it shouldn't bad. I would avoid 405. it's narrower and has more on/off and sunday shoppers - more stop and start traffic.

Gas up north of Seattle (consider Tulalip Casino / reservation around marysville) and try to get past Tacoma before you pull off the road to avoid the worst congestion. The Tulalip casino exits have easy on/off access gas, food and there is a Cabelas at that exit.

Regarding the Car pool lanes, you can tow in them but must maintain speed. They tend to be on the left side and often have jersey barriers on both sides. You may want to avoid them for this reason.

More info here: WSDOT - High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lanes
Quote:
Who can use freeway HOV lanes?

Drivers can use HOV lanes whenever there are two or more people (including the driver) in the vehicle. The definition of "people" is not limited by age or licensing status. Hybrid and other green vehicles are required to have the same number of occupants as other vehicles in the HOV lanes. Trucks are limited to 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, but there is no weight limit for recreational vehicles or buses. Towing is allowed in the HOV lanes as long as an adequate speed can be maintained and the combined weight does not exceed 10k.

Buses, emergency vehicles, and motorcycles can use freeway HOV lanes, regardless of how many people are on board.

Who cannot use freeway HOV lanes?
- People driving alone, except as noted above.
- Solo drivers who are passing another vehicle in the adjacent general purpose lane.
- Solo drivers in hybrid or other green vehicles.
- Trucks which weight more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight.
- Vehicles pulling a trailer when the total weight of both vehicles is more than 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, or when the combination is unable to keep up with the flow of traffic in the HOV lane.
