Traveled Home

Sadly, it was time to head back to Maine this past Wednesday. This time it was time to haul the 5er back with us.

Said good by to the many friends that we had met. We have relatives and grandkids that we sadly had to say good by to, also.

We got on the road Wednesday at noon (by design). We planned to stop at a truck stop in South Carolina, which we did. We wanted to be in an area that was warmer then the PA mountains brrrrr. We would have been there if we had left at 5:00AM, Wednesday.

We normally would have gone up I-95 to Maine. It's tough getting around the tunnels in New York, due to the propane tanks on board. We decided to see some different country side and headed up I-77 off I-95 in South Carolina. We then proceeded to I-81. Connected up at I-84 across to CT and up to I-495. We stopped in New Hamshire at 11:30PM. Dry camped again at a truck stop.

Woke up at 5:30AM Friday and got back on the road at 6:00AM. Landed home in Maine at 8:15AM.

8" of snow on the ground 25 degrees and back to work on Monday. Ain't it great to be home.

Now, can't wait 'till Memorial weekend for camping season to start.

On Sunday, we were down to blacktop roads and driveways, sump pumping working full time with the ground water thaw, snowmobile trails all but forgotten and then Monday came! We have had almost 3 feet of snow "showers" or lake effect snows showers and I really need a break! Only see my DH when he is sleeping, snowmobiles traveling 50mph down our road and I have to go to work today so the motel owner can "take a (snowmobile) ride" before he leaves Monday on his Caribbean cruise.....

Oh please Mother Nature - let it stop now!!! We need warm ~ dry weather before we can even think of getting the TH out of storage!!!!!

I am in Phoenix. Our camping season is just starting in October. It was 96 yesterday. Of course we have winter visitors...Snow Birds...that come every year from Nov. 1 to April 1 and fill the RV Parks with motor homes.

What are the rules regarding propane in the tunnels of the northeast? Not at all, or not on? Any difference between states? Any difference on Interstates? Asking because we hope to travel north on vacation sometime.

Best bet is to search each individual tunnel. Some are NO PROPANE, others are Propane only if turned off and they have check stations.

MartyG. On Interstate 95 in Massachusetts & New York you're not allowed in the tunnels with a camper.

Any other routes, with tunnels, in the Northeast I am unfamiliar with.

We always travel from Maine to Florida via I 95 to 495 to 90 To 84. Until we hit Interstate 81 (trucker route). We follow that through Pennsylvania and turn off on I 66 to route 17. Route 17 brings us back onto I 95 in Virginia. We take this route to avoid standing hair and white knuckles.

If you want to stay on I 95 In New York and avoid the tunnel you'll exit off to the Garden State Parkway. I have a 13'4" high 5er and have exited off on to the Garden State Parkway in the past. Problem is.......I have to be under the high point of each bridge overpass or I would take out my roof. It's a 3 lane highway so you move over accordingly. Kinda white knuckle for 50 miles . Don't go on the Parkway unless you're comfortable with moving back and fourth in traffic.

If you're going to tour around New York City and Boston Massachusetts, with your camper, be very mindful of your height and the posted bridge heights . It can get ya if your not paying attention .

Safe travels!

Unless Marty upgrades he doesn't have to worry too much about bridge clearance.

Our Coleman's top out at whopping 8'-11" and I am not so sure mine isn't a bit under that.
