Replacing Tires

I have a couple of trips planned in April that will take me further than my usual 30 minutes from the house. After all the different stories of failed factory tires and the damage they can cause, I'm strongly considering replacing mine before the April trips to provide some peace of mind.

I know this has been a topic in many posts but I'm looking for feedback on a tire choice for my particular trailer (Voltage 3200) and experiences from fellow Voltage owners with a particular brand of tire.

I'm also interested in the actual process of getting tires replaced. Do I need to remove say two tires at a time and take them up for replacement or do most tire shops perform the work in the parking lot?

My Voltage came with Akuret as yours probably did since its the same year. After a blow out and months of haggling with the tire people I finally got paid yesterday. The blow out happened last july. You are wise to change them out before they explode.

I decided on Maxxis tires after a lot of reading and research. I took mine to a car dealer I know and changed them in the parking lot. I have noticed most tire companies the parking lots are extremely small and pulling a camper into the lot would be a disaster to maneuver or turn around. Something to think about.

So far the maxxis are great tires and unless they fail I will reshoe the Voltage with them again.

I have a large truck tire shop where I live so the parking lot was not an issue. Sorry, I can't help there except to say go check out where you might go and see what they suggest.

I replaced my tires with Goodyear G614's. I now have 110 psi American made tires on Chinese wheels. The wheels are rated for 110 psi but it still makes me nervous.

If I would have know then what I know how, I would have replaced both wheels and tires with a 17.5" wheel and tire combo. Most likely Alcoa wheels and Goodyear G114's.

I replaced my Akuret with the Goodyear G614s too.

I bought the tires online, intending to mount them myself... but the sidewalls were too stiff to work on the manual machine i use to change motorcycle tires.

I used the 6-point hydraulic lift system to raise the wheels off of the ground on each side of the rig... removed them, and then took them & the new tires up to Walmart. When they mounted the new tires, I brought them home, replaced them on the left side... then raised the right side and repeated the process.

Yeah, it was a bit of busywork... but I figure by buying the tires online, and having WalMart mount them, I saved about $150 over what the local tire dealer wanted.

The manufacturer must have upgraded the wheels to 110 psi for the 3905 hauler because my 3800 wheels are rated at 80 psi. Same year but different floor plan. My wheels are rated with a 3960 lbs weight limit as well.

Makes one wonder what they had in mind if they put better wheels on the rig but kept the crappy tires.

My 3600 came with Westlake Chinese tires 235/80/16. I just got back from Discount Tire in Tucson with six Michelin XPS RIBs 235/85/16 (made in Great Britain). Fit was not an issue going to the 85 series, I used the original rims with steel valve steams, and 80 psi. The RIBs are an awesome tire.

Set me back $2100 for six RIBs but now I have peace of mind. Oh, and I've only had the 3600 for a week but have zero faith in Chinese tires.

It was no problem pulling into the Discount lot and backing in to where they wanted me. Discount used 6 jacks to get all the wheels off the ground at the same time. Got a good look at the suspension in the process.

BTW, during my PDI I was instructed NOT to use the 6-point leveling system to raise the entire trailer off the ground.

Nope, but you sure can tweak it a little to change a flat.

You know. I am NOT positive that the wheels are rated 110 psi. From what I have read online. The eight spoke alloy wheels are rated 110 psi. The tire shop also told me the wheels were stamped for 110 psi but I did not get to see that in person. I realize they are selling tires but I would hope they would not install a tire on a wheel that was underrated.

What wheels do you have and why do you say they are rated for 80 psi?

Come to think of it, I did see a 5er, at Camping World Tucson being held up by the levelers with the tires off but they had jack stands under the axles. Still, not worth it to me to try it and perhaps damage my levelers. Got a real stout bottle jack to use instead.

This subject will see a lot of debate depending where you look. I have seen it stated that you are to jack only from the frame as the axles could deform if they were use to jack the trailer. I don't know. I have jacked trailers quite a few times from the axles. But nothing as heavy as my 3905.

One time I accidentally lifted my wheels of of the ground with the hydraulics. On inspection, the center ram had leaked some fluid so I am not planning to do it again. It did not seem to have damaged the ram since I have auto leveled several times since and not seen any leakage.

When I go here,
16x6 Hi Spec HWT Series 07 Black Inlay Aluminum Trailer Wheel 8 on 6.5 Lug, 3,960 lb Max Load I see the exact wheel I have on the 3800. The specs list 80 psi and the OEM part number is 668650HD B.
You can find the OEM part number on your wheel on the sticker on the backside of the wheel.

Looking the picture in the link you provided. We do have different wheels. Both eight spoke and eight lug though. I guess I need to look around a little further. Maybe I don't want to know.

Just looked, mine are Sumec according to the sticker that is still readable.

You may be OK then. I had to replace one of the Hi-Spec's and in doing so I became familiar with them while researching what tire I wanted on them.

I don't think Hi-Spec gets into 110 psi until it's a ten spoke wheel. Hopefully the Sumec is the right wheel for the 614s.

Hopefully! I am having a hard time finding any information on them. I tried without success before putting the tires on.

I looked around for the Sumec wheel. Seems all returns come back as Sumec being a Hi-Spec model/brand.

16 inch, 8 lug so further investigation for safety's sake is needed. I'd like some 614s but the pressures don't match. I might have to go with the XPS Ribs because I don't want to buy new wheels.

I have heard good things about the XPS Ribs. Aren't they a LT tire with a lower rating. So much reading.

I still am not finding anything but a couple of pictures of the Sumec wheels. One picture looked exactly like my wheels but said it was a 17.5 with a G114 on it. Still looking.

However, in your case, it looks like you already have your answer.

The Ribs are rated LT with an E load.

I have LT Es on the truck, Michelins, and they are working well for me. It does get confusing what with the load rating of the tires, air pressures and axle load carrying specs.

Gimme some steel wheels and bias ply tubed tires and my headache will go away.

I'm still waiting for the hot water line to defrost from last night's freeze!

Nope, been in northeast Oklahoma since the first of the month. The hot water has thawed, once again.
