I did it at the axle. You would have to lift it much higher at the frame to get the tires off the ground.

One time I accidentally lifted my wheels of of the ground with the hydraulics. On inspection, the center ram had leaked some fluid so I am not planning to do it again. It did not seem to have damaged the ram since I have auto leveled several times since and not seen any leakage.
Wonder if you were to put blocks under the jacks so the length of travel of the jacks wouldn't need to be as much before you got lift-off of the wheels. Might that make a difference? In other words, anything to limit the amount of travel.

As wide-spread as the china bomb tire issue appears to be, wonder why there have been no class-action lawsuits directed against the manufacturer (i.e. Dutchmen). If they are aware that they are putting crap on their trailers, they are culpable for damages.

Makes one wonder what they had in mind if they put better wheels on the rig but kept the crappy tires.
How do you determine the ratings on the wheels?

Should be stamped on the inside of the wheel.

I'm pretty sure I'll move to 17.5" wheels...can you get a Maxxis for the 17.5? If so, where and cost if you know.

DesertRat is correct on stamped. As a rule of thumb but not ALWAYS accurate is that the rubber pull thru type stems are rated up to 80psi, where the ones that are steel and threaded and assemble into the wheel with rubber washers and nuts are the higher rated ones.

Don, do you recall which model of wheel this is? I see your picture and those on the wheel site, but can't match them up.

07 Black Hi Spec

17.5" 8 Lug Series 07 Black Hi Spec Aluminum Trailer Wheel

You will not regret it! The ystand behind them too - I had one that had a steel lug well insert come loose - they asked for photos, which I provided. I had a new one in a few days!

First, I hope you and others know I was just kidding about the "damn you". I certainly do not hold it against anyone only having had to buy 4 versus my 6. Just a joke. But, I (think I) would be willing to take on the extra weight if it saved me over a $grand. It does irritate at the least, not at least having these manufacturers offering an option to get decent tires/wheels even if it meants paying more. What waste! While my tires may be nothing more than china bombs, they still COST money that I paid when I bought. Same for the wheels. Just pure waste. I would have been willing to pay the difference to get something I'm willing to use. Here is the quote I got:

Our 17.5" tire and wheel packages include: tire, wheel, mounted, balanced, center cap and lug nuts.

215/75R17.5 LRJ Continental HTL2 on Series 07 Aluminum Wheel - $580 each

We do have a sale right now on Goodyear G114 tires on Lynx Aluminum Wheel for $580 each. (reg. $600 each)

YRC LTL freight to a business address or picked up at their freight center - $195

Is that in line with what you paid last year? Or have prices gone up? $3700 when I probably could have paid half that or less for tires/wheels that I would want, NOT what they force on you. You listening Dutchmen? Yeah, right!

I'd be interested in hearing from others if they would take the Goodyear over the Continental if they are the same price???

Dutchman isn't the only manufacture putting on bad tires. Just go to a RV show & check others out. I got free shipping from the place I bought mine. I also installed Hankooks which I got from ebay with free shipping. As I had MAJOR tire failures with Goodyear 16" tires on my Teton I don't trust them!!
We have run Hankooks here at work for years with no problems. Has been a great tire on my F-350 also with no problems at all.

I think I have changed my source for tires. I will be using Trailer Wheel & Tire Superstore. We offer trailer rims, trailer tires with Free Shipping over $50.. I can get the Series 07 Black Aluminum Hi-Spec 17.5 much cheaper than at Trailer Tires and Wheels - Steel & Aluminum Trailer Wheels, Bias & Radial Trailer Tires. The first company doesn't have quite the selection of tires as the second company, but they have a tire that they say they sell a lot of and have never had anyone report a failure in over 6 years...and they say they use this on their own trailers. Very easy to talk to and that means a lot. I know that anyone can say anything and it doesn't mean it is true, but this company has been mentioned quite a few times by several people on this list, so I would also assume that it would not take long before lies become known, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as it will also be saving me around $800. So, between the free mounting and free shipping, I think I will risk the tire and take them at their word. So, unless someone can tell me a reason to avoid the Hercules ST215/75R17.5, that is what I'll be getting. They do charge $8 per tire for balancing though. Still getting out the door for under $2900 to my door (well, maybe the local freight center...not sure on that yet).

Here is the cart: ITEMS QTY PRICE TOTAL

17.5x6.75 Series07 Black Aluminum HiSpec Trailer Wheel, 8 Lug, Center Cap Incl., 4850 lb Max Load $216.27 $1,297.62

ST215/75R17.5 Hercules H-902 Radial Trailer Tire LR H, 4806 lb Max Load $244.00 $1,464.00

Subtotal $2,761.62
TOTAL $2,761.62

Mine came right to my door via UPS.

If looking for away to get rid of your OEM tires & wheels they fit older 3/4 & one ton Fords & Dodges. I sold the ones off my Teton that way when I changed out to the 17.5" package.

Any thoughts on how best to get rid of the original wheels and tires? Less than 500 miles on them. Certainly can/will put on Craigslist, but other ideas?

Let us know how they hold up. I ordered mine today from Michael. Supposed to be here in 7-10 days. I REALLY LIKE the Continentals.

I am curious how the rest of you got rid of your stockers...

Because Dutchmen puts the claims back on the tire manufacturers and they claim the tires are made to DOT specs, which for trailer tires are extremely low and vague. The tires are legal. Quality?

The only safe thing is to buy a better quality and stronger tire. Dutchmen only cares about profits and little else, like most of the RV industry.
