Heat and Slides...To Much Glass

Hey all,

I have a 3905 model with the large living room slide. I know allot you have the same slide or similar. I have added window awnings to help keep the slides cooler.

I am in southwest Arizona and it is just spring. It's a beautiful, sunny 71 degree day, and the side/end glass of the slide is exposed to direct sunlight. It is 123 degrees up at the top part of the glass.

I am not looking forward to summer.

A friend of mine just bought a XLR Thunder Bolt by Forest River. It has dual pane windows and it does make a difference.

I hear you... I'm down the road a bit in Casa Grande. My LR slide is in direct exposure during the hot afternoon hours. I've got slide-toppers, and they help some... but the entire slide really heats up in the sunlight. I've thought of buying a large rain-fly type tarp to erect over the rig for shade... but with the frequent winds we get, not sure it'd stay put.

Have also thought of having an awning installed on that side, with brackets on either side of the slide, like those on the curb side... but think that'd look kind of odd.

The good part for me is that I'm out of here next week, beginning my trek back to NC.

Hmmm,
We're headed up to Phoenix next week. I probably should look at the site they assign me to see if I can't angle the slide away from the afternoon sun. Thanks for pointing this particular issue out and have a safe trip back home.

Well, be careful now...

The picture below is my current setup in Casa Grande. The nose of the rig is facing north... which puts the sun tracing a left-to-right arc across the southern horizon when facing aft.

In this config, my double awnings do a great job of shading the rig during the morning hours, so heat doesn't build up the rig... but, as I stated above, the slide-side is completely exposed to the sun during the afternoon hours.

Now, the good part of this is... the awning side of the rig, is nicely shaded in the afternoons, and is where I usually hang out during that time. Given that there's usually a decent breeze going... it's very comfortable out there.

In contrast, my friend's rig faces south... and his awning area beside his rig is pretty much useless in the afternoons. Just flat out too hot, as the awning doesn't shade much after the sun peaks and begins it's descent. The angle just doesn't get it.

So all in all, I've got a pretty decent set-up with my north-facing profile. The rear patio is pretty much useless except in the mornings & late evenings... but that's usually where I have my breakfast, and then sit out there for awhile at night before heading to bed.

Have you seen these. I am thinking about ordering. The shorter portion at the top stays installed and rolls up with your awning. You just zip the lower section on for more shade. They also make an end shade that is supposed to release itself when you retract the awning.

I also got these from the same company. In my case they came out and installed them.

Yes... well, something similar.

Since our awnings are made by Carefree... I bought their Sunblocker shade, and have used it occasionally. It does have to be removed before rolling up the awning.

It's not really needed at my current site, due to my rig's orientation... so I loaned to the friend I mentioned. He tried it, but says it still isn't enough... so he just comes and spends time at my rig every afternoon... whether I'm home or not. In fact, he's here right now. LOL

The shade link I posted is also made by Carefree. What interested me was the fact that it did not have to be removed. I'm lazy and would not want to be pilling the shade through that slot all the time.

How does that end shade attach?

This weekend, we were in Santa Barbara, it was quite hot. 30 amp hook up, 90 degrees outside, one AC, kept about 74 inside, couldn't complain, but 50 amp is a requirement when that hot out. Anyway, I got a few rolls of foil bubble wrap from Home Depot, cut them for the windows and velcroed them up, IR thermometer before 130 degrees, after 75 degrees. Going to make shades for all the windows, fairly cheap, about $40 for the three rolls.

Heat

Living in Florida I experience the same heating on the slides. Slide awnings are the cure. on a 70 degree day it would be 90-100 degrees near the ceiling. Now it is nearer the internal temp of the coach. Ordered over amazon and ebay. Installed myself. Much easier than you would think.

Cale kind of half to at 90 being hot. Living in the desert that's not hot but coming from Monterey I know where your coming from. We have been up to Monterey quite a few times to cool off from our desert heat.
I have those window awnings on my Teton & will add them to the Voltage as they do make a big difference.

I hear you. We are actually from FL, have a home in JAX. It is quite chilly in Monterey, cannot wait to get back to the heat of FL (could live without the humidity though).

Kinda off-topic, but it's amazing how 2 places... 3 hours, 180 miles, and oh yeah, 6000 feet of altitude... can be so different.

Been lamenting the heat for the past couple weeks. Left Phoenix earlier today... woke up to 60 degrees, climbed to 94 by 1pm.

Arrived Flagstaff a little before 5pm... 62 degrees, heading down to 37.

Don't think I'll be using the A/C for the next few days... HaHa!

Used to ride each year to Las Vegas for Labor Day weekend. Riding through Phoenix in September was good for well over 100 degrees. Run on up to Flagstaff and 40 wasn't abnormal.

How about snow in June at the Grand Canyon? Was on the scooter that time and of course wasn't prepared for that coldness.
